Could my AirPort be dying?
For the past few months, I've had to reboot it nearly every day or two, and today, I've had to boot it several times today. I noticed this especially when I was trying to stream something on my Roku. I run the Roku on Ethernet rather than on wi-fi, but since my cable modem has only one Ethernet cable outlet, I have to run it through the AirPort.

If I don't want to spring for a new AirPort, are other wireless routers acceptable?

1. i use a non-apple router for my wired and wireless access. if macs didn't support
that, mac users would have to wander around looking for hotspots run from airport routers, and then nobody would want to buy a mac

there are various flavors of wifi. first lookup what kind your machines have, so you have some idea what you're looking for

2. Airport is optimized for Macs, but most others will work just fine.
You may have a few extra minutes of set up with other brands, but they'll work just fine.

We had an older Linksys for a long time and it worked great. I never managed to figure out the security, so our network was vulnerable. No worry where we are, but still vulnerable if anyone was near our house looking for a network.

My wife just installed a new Netgear in her office, which is mixed, Windows and Macs. It has a guest feature, where she can let guests sign on for internet access but they can't see the office network at all. Cool stuff.

At home we have the router Verizon gave us that is both wired and wifi, and we have an Airport Extreme hooked to that. They're set up as two different networks, but give us full coverage on virtually any part of our property. I also have a plain old Airport that I use when I travel. I essentially bring my own wireless network along with me. Even in a hotel with only wired access, I can hook up the Airport and have wifi. It also lets me do Keynotes from my iPad or even my iPhone.
