Has anyone encountered issues when moving from Snow Leopard to Lion?
Its a big deal for us because it involves our whole company doing it. We waited a very long time for the move from Leopard to Snow Leopard. With Lion out in 10.7, 10.7.1, and recently 10.7.2, it is either time (all bugs worked out) or they are having troubles with it, hence the rapid release of the third update.

We need to get moving because we rely on Mobile Me and are feeling some pressure to move to iCloud, what with MobileMe slated for a death sentence in June.

Our oldest machine is a 2.66 Core 2 Duo/4GB Ram iMac. Our newest are current model MacBook Pros. We have a total of nine machines to upgrade.

What has been your experience with the upgrade? Any software problems? We expect just one - we still use FileMaker 8.5. I think we have to go to at least 9.0 to run under Lion. Also wondering about Adobe CS4, but I'm thinking that will run.

Any comments would be most appreciated.

1. I only can report from personal experience, which is that I have had zero problems.
Moving from Snow Leopard to Lion was the least painful OS move I've ever encountered. I did do a 'clean install.' I always do when jumping to a new cat. A good excuse to dump little used software and extensions weighing down my system.

My company plans to move to Lion 'some time next year,' so we may be facing some of the same issues. We are running Adobe CS5, which runs fine on my two-year old MBP with Lion.

Here is a site to check software compatibility:

2. Thanks!
I saw that site a while ago. It is a good reference, but a little out of date. Our CAD software, for example, is listed and that site is one version behind.

Do you like Lion?

3. Yes. The new gestures with a trackpad are far superior to SL.

They have made the trackpad my preferred input device over my beloved circa 2001 Microsoft Trackball and any mouse.*

Launchpad is great. Basically its OS X stealing from iOS, the full page of icons for app launching.

Resume is mostly good. Sometimes it's annoying if I quit an app with a lot of documents/pages open, because they all have to re-open upon application launch.

Auto-Save and Versions is really only in the Apple apps at the moment, but as developers catch up, has great potential.

Mail is much more 'modern' feeling. They really stepped up there.

*One weird (stupid) thing though is that they moved 'drag lock' into the Universal Access control panel, out of the Trackpad control panel. That drove my wife and I crazy until I tracked it down. If you care, note this: System Preferences > Universal Access > Trackpad Options > Check 'Dragging' with 'Drag Lock.'

4. i had massive email headaches.
back up any email from other than mobile me. i had to take mine in to have the email app removed and reinstalled.
also lost some videos that were cross platform. anything that was power pc will not work any more.

do you have a phone? at the worst of it, i was saving email drafts and launching them from my phone.

5. I finally upgraded to Lion, and only encountered two issues
I was a Quicken for Mac user. It does not work at all under Lion. However, I always thought that program was a massive POS, and was shopping around for a replacement anyway. This will just force my hand.

My only other issue was with VMWare Fusion (allows me to run Window$ in a virtual machine - thanks to one lousy application I need for work). That issue turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I had neglected/refused to upgrade Fusion to a current version for years. OS Lion forced me to do so. As a result, Fusion and Window$ now run significantly faster with no difficulties.

I did upgrade my MacBook's memory prior to installing Lion. I was running 2GB. 8GB for my machine was only $50 at otherworldcomputing.com. I have heard that Lion will run with 2GB, but not very well.

All in all, the experience was good, and I'm happy with Lion. I'm a big trackpad lover, and Lion really enhances the functionality of it.

I can't say with any certainty whether my good experience is a result of the new OS or the new memory. Maybe a little of both.

6. I switched to iBank
It has a few quirks, but I love it. I has an app for iPhone/iPod. I use that instead of a check register now. Works great. Easy sinc back and forth from main computer to iPod.

7. I've been considering that
The other I've thought of is SEE, which has gotten some pretty good reviews. Whichever has the better iPhone app will probably win it for me, so I'll check out iBank carefully.

Thanks for the info!

:hi:

9. I'll second iBank. It works great, easy to use, talks to our accountant, has iDevice apps
Some users complain about some of the more esoteric investment functions either missing or not very functional, but I have no first hand experience in that area. As an alternative to Quicken, it is great.
