posted about the South here. I have personally lost interest in trying to enlighten anyone who is strongly anti-Southern, because they prefer scapegoating to facts. But I suspect that as a group we could come up with a list of top ten false arguments about the South, and refutations thereof. (Or something like that.) The "Southerners won't vote for Northerners" bull for example; in addition to Reagan, Bush I, Dole, Nixon, Kennedy, Stevenson (against a native Texan), and Truman, each of whom carried several Southern states, we have four consecutive victories by FDR. So in 1932-36-40-44-48-52-56-60-72-80-84-88-92-96 or 14 elections out of 17 this "accepted axiom" has been completely wrong.
On at least ten subjects, such oft-repeated canards about Southerns could easily be shot down with a paragraph or two of evidence. But they would be repeated again the next time anyone raised the subject, so if we compiled and saved a set of arguments against them it could be put into service ever time bashing erupts.
