Woo! Thrift store finds of the day:
A box grater -- 80 cents.
A non-teflon (I have birds), cast-aluminum electric waffle maker (Fostoria, 1950s, good condition, made waffles tonight so I know it works) -- $5.
An off-brand 1.5L food processor (probably 1980s, an utter POS, missing the shred/grate blade holder but it will do for pastry and for pulverizing things) -- $4
A pasta fork/spoon (what do you call those things, anyway) -- 50 cents.
A sliver(-ish) platter -- $3.

:bounce:
I love going to thrift stores for cheap cooking accessories. What have you gotten at thrift stores lately?

1. Nice!
The waffle maker might even look cool just sitting there being from that era. I don't know what to call the pasta tool. It's a fork, it's a slottled spoon, it's necessary!

It's been a while since I went thrifting. Now you've got me thinking I should set some time aside soon. You found some good stuff!

DH & I used to go estate selling (junking). We haven't been in ages. Your thread got me interested. I need to go through tomorrows paper & check.

framed piece of art for the dining room

sounds like you came home with lots of treasures! I love it when I find stuff like that :bounce:

DH is so good as I cart in bags and bags "What treasures did you find this time hon?" he'll ask and then (like the great guy he is) actually ohhh and ahhh as I unwrap them LOL

but I know about kitchen scores, check out this from this spring...

a pizza stone with paddle, a HUGE stainless bowl, ditto stainless strainer, a cutting board and sundry other lovely pieces

6. HI! yes we have picked colors (and you'll love it) I found this teapot
at the thrift store and it became the inspiration piece.

so we are going for greyish blue on the walls, with that "federalist" blue as trim and see what it does to the pink in the counters. we are also talking restaining the cabinets a bit darker/oranger to pick up that terra cotta color on the bottom of the pot.

I'm taking down the pink shades and gonna make roman shades that will fit inside the windows with a fabric in those colors (still to be choosen)

did you see what I did in the bedroom? I found a great duvet and sheets and made curtains etc. that's on the list for a warmer color too this fall

how are YOU???

7. It is looking great, AZDem!

We worked hard on the front yard this spring. Still a few problems with drainage, etc, but otherwise, it is looking great.

The kids are doing well, too. The youngest is potty training and the older is learning to read :gasp: How did they get so big!

On a sadder note, my BC died two weeks ago. She had chronic renal failure and it finally got the best of her. I am still pretty destroyed over it. She was such a sweet girl, and a great companion to me and to the kids. I am sad that she had to die so young. Not fair, you know?

9. We knew for the past four years that this day was coming.
But somehow it is not any easier now that it is here. Ruby had a hard start in life. In addition, she was hyper intelligent and hyper sensitive. So she know that she had failed somehow when her first owner abandoned her (and she had. She was bred to be a working dog and just didn't make the cut. She was roughly disciplined at first, then ignored).

So when we got her, she was terrified of being abandoned again. And she tried to be perfect at everything. It was almost painful to watch sometime. She would be watching my face so anxiously trying to figure out just what I wanted. But the past year, it was like she was finally free of all that fear. She was no longer afraid of the children, and played with them constantly. She would steal food in the kitchen every chance she got. Now I know that most dog owners wouldn't be happy that their dog was misbehaving, but with Ruby, it represented a huge step forward. It meant that she knew she belonged in our family, and wouldn't be exiled for minor infractions.

So I guess I should be grateful that she had the happy time she did. But I keep thinking, too young! Not fair! She had just begun to blossom.

Sorry to dump all of this here in the cooking forum, but I kind of consider this my 'home forum'. Although, I must say, the people in the pets forum have been very supportive, too.

10. my oldest girl (an aussie/border mix) had very much the same problems
when we rescued her from the pound. abandonment, rough "discipline" it took us years to get her to come around.

You gave her a good life and lots of love so she is a happy girl. But it doesn't fill the empty spot in your life or stop the pain of her loss.

again wild, I'm so sorry, wish I could do more than just send cyber hugs....

4. I must get to the thrift shops.
Thing is, I hate shopping with my kids. They are all over the place. But I would love to have a waffle iron. Not enough to actually purchase one retail, but if the price was right.......

12. The cool thing about this waffle iron...
...is that there are NO SAFETY FEATURES whatsoever. It gets hot. The handles get warm. The (non-polarized) plug gets warm. Don't leave this thing unattended, kids. :D

BUT...the real cool thing is that the waffle plates reverse into griddle plates! Today, I tested it a bit and made fried eggs (which were OK but they ran everywhere -- it's good if I needed to make 6 eggs at once or something, but otherwise I'll stick to the skillet) and a very good grilled cheese. I think it'll make a superlative panini/Cuban sandwich/etc. And I'll be able to make 6-8 pancakes at once instead of the one or two I can fit in the skillet, without all the heat my stove creates.

13. the one thing my hubby always does is carefully check the cords
on all/any electricial stuff I bring home. if it's frayed or worn he replaces them for me. a fire hazard otherwise he tells me

sounds like a wonderful score all around though, i love those griddle/waffle irons

14. Why didn't anyone tell me about grilled peanut butter and banana
sandwiches until today?

(OK, yeah, Elvis. His were fried.)

I've spent most of my cooking time this weekend playing with the waffle maker/grill. This morning, I made a peanut butter and banana sandwich on multi-grain bread. :9
