Safeway and my cheap supper for two

Went shopping with a girlfriend today. We stopped at Safeway and wow - some good $1.00 sales. A sack of yellow onions for a buck and Polish kielbasa, 2 in a package for a buck.

So, tonight it was the meal in a bowl. Fried a couple of onions, added in the sausages sliced and then the last of my fire roasted sweet peppers from the green grocer. Supper in a bowl for hubby and me for about a dollar each. Served with King Sooper's dollar apple juice. A great vintage, probably last week!

I'm going back to Safeway before next Wednesday for more onions and a dollar sack of potatoes. I love it when they have the basics on sale like this.

2. safeway's pot stickers aren't bad

A bag of them from the freezer section is under $5, and I think it contains about 30. Two flavors, pork/chicken or vegetarian. With some rice and stir-fry veggies, that makes four dinner servings. Oh, and we like their house brand ginger sauce, which is in the marinade section.

I swear that some restaurateurs are using these Safeway pot stickers instead of investing in the labor to make them from scratch, because they are very often out of stock.

I like looking for bargains at Safeway, although I only go there about once a month and usually shop elsewhere. Once I found some packages of excellent discontinued fresh soft mozarella marked down so far that I had to buy them all. At 75 cents per pound with all the discounts.

3. I have a cousin

who owns a very successful Italian restaurant in New Jersey.

They buy their ravioli in the frozen food section at Costco. They make out like bandits on the markup, although their sauce ("gravy" in their neighborhood) is home-made and really wonderful.

Very good. The ravioli I buy is filled with spinich and cheese. I love it. Have discovered some tasty things by trying the sample tables. My grandkids help out, as they love both of these items.They also carry an eggplant lasagna that is good.
