I may make Chicken Fried Steak again, but I am open to new recipes.

I was pretty happy with my first attempt at CFS. I'll leave out cracker crumbs this time though.
Feel free to share your favorite Chicken Fried Steak recipes, too.

4. My Grandmother's "recipe"
Edited on Sun Mar-05-06 12:01 AM by SoCalDem
pound the round steak... soak the pounded steaks in a mixing bowl in water with a bit of vinegar & a small dab of salt..

soak until they turn a bit whitish..

remove steaks and dry a LITTLE bit on paper towel...Dredge with salted/peppered flour..

Heat oil (she used crisco..so do I).. to just about smoking point.. Place steaks in the skillet and do NOT turn them until it's crispy on the first side.. turn and wait until that side's crispy..

remove from pan.. stir up the "crumbles".. add a bit more crisco and more flour..stier it until it's browned..(bubbly)...and not burned..

Then stir in water..whisk constantly... If you want milk gravy, use half milk--half water or all milk..

10. Thank you
I will definitely try your recipe. The local meat market has a special on cubed steaks this week. I think I'll just zip over there tomorrow and pick up a few.

3. Here's what I like to do...
it's nothing fancy. Season and pan fry and then top with spaghetti sauce (I use the store bought kind)and Mozzarella cheese and stick in the oven until the cheese melts. It's really a lazy recipe, but my kids love it.

5. My favorite way:
Salt and pepper the steaks, season with a little onion powder. Dredge them in flour and brown both sides in a little oil Add about a cup of water, cover, and let braise for about 15 minutes.

Eat as is (they make their own gravy, great on potatoes) or fancy it up with some drained tinned mushrooms.

It's quick, really simple, and tasty in the comfort food sense of the word.

I'm not a meat eater and I'm getting hungry reading this.

6. In college (before I knew how to cook from scratch) I used to
just pan fry them, then simmer for a while in some cream of mushroom soup gravy. Serve over boiled potatoes or rice.

7. I think I am gonna try something similar
I'll fry the steaks after dredging in flour, and try to make a white cream of mushroom (soup) gravy.
I'll take the steaks out then make the "gravy" and add the steaks in after the "gravy" is thickened.
I am gonna try to make this gravy similar to the way one makes white gravy. I may boil the potatoes and add them in to the gravy when I put the steaks back in, and have cooked (frozen) green beans.

I am going with this for the "gravy"

1 large can of cream of mushroom soup
1 package of onion soup mix
1 can of mushrooms
3 tbsp dry chopped onions
1/2 can of milk

9. I make something very similar, and I call it "Mushroom Steak."
I brown the cube steaks with salt and pepper, a little worcestershire, and then remove them from the pan, add a little oil and sautee some fresh mushrooms and onions, put the meat back in, add a can or two of mushroom soup and some kitchen bouquet for a "brownier" look and cook until tender. Scrumptious over mashed potatoes with some green beans on the side.
