Doctoring up some plain yogurt
I wasn't in the mood for the plain yogurt. So I added a small splash each of vanilla and caramel flavorings. Then hit it with some ice cream topping syrup that's apple pie flavored. A Safeway Select item. Tastes good!

I'm going to have to experiment some more. Maybe pick up new flavorings to make different flavored yogurts.

1. this may sound crazy
But some years ago I wanted fruit flavored yogurt and only had plain. So I sprinkled some raspberry Kool-aid powder and some sugar on the plain yogurt, stirred it in, and it was delicious. I've since then not been shy about adding stuff to plain yogurt.

But now that I've discovered Trader Joe's greek style yogurt, it's all I want. The fig, the honey, the strawberry -- it's so good.

2. How I wish we had a TJs!
The fig sounds great! Dannon used to make a prune flavored yogurt many years ago. It sounds odd but it was delish.

I've found that adding the frozen, sweetened strawberries to plain turns out exactly like the strawberry with fruit on the bottom.

I like your Kool-aid idea. I wonder how grape would taste? When the stuff goes on sale this summer I'm ging to try some combos. Thanks!

3. I wonder what a little mint extract would do for plain yogurt
Either incredibly yummy or awful. I bet it could be yummy.

4. That crossed my mind, too!
I think that if a little vanilla was added along with some sweetener, it could work out. Stirring a cup of vanilla yogurt with a candy cane should get the flavor going.

5. Given that mint and yogurt
are very Mediterranean, I think it'd be quite good if you didn't overdo the mint.

6. Definitely
I just splashed the caramel and vanilla last night. And once when I used some fancy banana flavoring, I had to pour it on. But mint would be a drop at a time. I'm intrigued with trying some grape Kool-aid. That's another one that could be good or lousy.

9. I was amazed at how truly fruity the Kool-aid powder ...
...made it taste. I know it sounds nuts. I have since done it with other flavors. Lemon, strawberry, etc. I often use lemon Kool-aid powder in a dish if I am out of lemon juice or lemons. I realize that's the same as using citric acid powder. It's just that I often have a couple of packets of Kool-aid in the house. Mandarin-tangerine is a good flavor, but not widely available.

I even thought of recipes featuring Kool-aid, though I haven't tried them. Ham meatballs with a grape glaze for an appetizer, and so on.

Hey, if iceberg lettuce can make a revival, why not Kool-aid?

14. News to me
I mainly use it for texture, on a sandwich or for tacos. It's useless in a salad.

17. yep
A couple of years ago Gourmet magazine featured an editorial on the merits of iceberg and noted that many upscale restaurants are featuring it again. If you google "iceberg lettuce comeback" you'll find 15,200 hits for the phrase.

10. Raspberry jam.

The sour unsweetened yogurt is a wonderful combination with a swirl of sweet jam.

12. Oooh, I could go for that!
I've used the sweetened, frozen strawberries and it's a dead ringer for strawberry yogurt. But raspberry is one of my favorite flavors. We used to get a raspberry soda when I was a kid back east. White Rock brand. You just don't see it out here in the west.

13. Jam, jam and more jam.
There's a reason I have 6 open jars of jam in my refrigerator. Strawberry, raspberry, cherry, peach, pear preserves (yum) and mango.

Tried it once with rose jelly from the mediterranian grocery, but it didn't work so well. (though the jam made an incredible glaze for chicken...)

15. Chocolate ice cream. Maple syrup.
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 12:22 PM by Dora
I had a bowl of choco ice cream this weekend, and on a lark I "topped" it with some plain yogurt. Nicely tart and chocolatey.

I also like maple syrup with my plain yogurt.
