"Dye Recipes
Select a dyeing agent, and place it in the pot using the amount listed below. Add 1 quart water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar to pot; if more water is necessary to cover ingredients, proportionally increase the amount of vinegar. Bring to a boil, then lower heat. Allow the ingredients to simmer for 30 minutes. Strain dye into a bowl.

* Red-cabbage dye: 4 cups chopped cabbage
* Turmeric dye: 3 tablespoons turmeric
* Onion-skin dye: 4 cups onion skins (skins of about 12 onions)
* Beet dye: 4 cups chopped beets
* Coffee dye: 1 quart strong black coffee (instead of water)

1. I've been wanting to try this - so thank you!
I would think the beet juice would make a great color. Amazed at the onion skin color. Do you think boiling with spinach would make a good green?

2. I don't know about spinach
You could give it a try. Spinach water is an odd color. If you did a few eggs, they might make an interesting contrast.

My grandmother used to always use the onion skins. She was born in Europe and they always did that. When they were done, she would put a tiny drop of cooking oil on them to give them a glow. Not much but just a smidge and they looked very pretty with the soft shine. She'd make them on Holy Saturday and they'd all be gone by Easter evening. So they didn't sit and get icky.

3. speaking of things Easter-ish...
..my local newspaper printed yesterday a recipe for making marshmallow peeps at home. If anyone wants it, I'll copy it here. I hate the little things, but am considering making them for a neighborhood brunch just for fun.

6. it's a homemade marshmallow candy
Made with gelatin, etc. Cooked. Poured out, set, then cut with cookie cutters and covered with colored superfine sugar.

8. Peeps make really, really good Rice Krispie treats.
And if you be-head the little suckers before you use them to make the treats, you can put the heads on as decoration.

I only like Peeps three ways - toasted, toasted and smashed between graham crackers with chocolate for extra-sugary smores, and in Rice Krispie treats. I'm so glad they come but once a year...
