Most bizarre recipe concept ever? Crown Roast of Hot Dogs
http://www.smartandfinal.com/recipe.aspx?ID=1612

Tie a bunch of hot dogs together with dental floss, in a formation to resemble a crown roast. Mix up a high-fat, high-sodium filling and bake it all. Maybe the strangest part of the whole concept is that it's listed in the "high fiber" section of their recipes, so you go there thinking it might be kind of healthy.

1. I noticed they don't dare post a photo.
I love Smart & Final, but that's just gross...

11. I think Lileks had a weenie crown roast on his web site
but I can't find it now. His was from one of those 50s booklets about entertaining on a strict budget and it was held together with toothpicks.

I can't remember what was in the middle. I want to say mashed potatoes (it was the 50s, remember).

It looked pretty foul. Who'd want to do that to an innocent weenie?

4. As a single mom with 4 kids, I can tell you I've done a lot of
things with hot dogs in my day, but I would never have thought of doing this. I'm disappointed that they didn't have a picture.

It may not be the exact photo for this recipe---But it gives you the right idea. We had a thread on these kinds of culinary adventures a while back. Sorry, I couldn't get it any larger but I guess if you are really brave you can use it as an avatar.

9. I can rant here, right?
Today I made my father (he's been here every damned day for five days painting the patio) a lovely sandwich of curried chicken salad (with mango/apricot chutney and celery & onion & raisins) on oat bread with alfalfa sprouts. He said the sandwich was "too big". I shoulda given him balogna. What ARE the penalties for patricide?

10. My parents were the same
A treat for them was diner food. I never did get them to one of the great local restaurants for New Mexican cuisine (very different from Tex Mex or Mexican), and I do know places that go easy on the hot stuff.

Oh well, the best way to honor them is to give them what they want, and I did find some good diners. Maybe making the sacrifice and giving the guy bologna on Wonder Bread with a side of canned tomato soup is the best thing you can do.

14. can't help but think of Twinkie Dogs
A favorite in the pre-teen set. Split a Twinkie, insert a hot dog. Microwave, and top with some of that cheeze in a can squirty stuff.
