Anybody have any garden veggies yet ?
My tomatoes and peppers are about 2 months from yielding fruit. I had some yellow tomato flowers, but I pick them off until the plant is about 3 feet tall.

1. The co-op had fiddlehead ferns on Thursday.
Blech. Been there, done that, no amount of garlic can make them palatable.

The lilacs are out, though, and the whole town smells pretty.

3. Our farmers market has nada, zilch
Grapefruits and oranges. Raddishes and carrots. The samo-samo we've had for the last four months. I swear, when I see a zucchini, I'll dance for joy.

2. Noooo, boohoohoo
It's too damned cold and rainy still. I hate this weather. I managed to put the tomatoes into their containers, but they're sitting there, shivering. My rose didn't leaf out properly, and it's making anemic blooms.

The end of April, and it's still raining and the temperature has only gone into the 70's once or twice. Is this California or Siberia?

4. We can't even plant much outside yet here in WI
I'm doing a garden with whoisalhedges, dolo amber and a few others, but about all we can do right now is prep it and sow some radishes and greens. We can plant tomatoes around Mothers Day.

5. Lettuce and asparagus. We have gotten some fairly good
tomatoes from Florida. I think they're Ruskins and they only seem to be available at this time of year. Not red, ripe, sweet and juicy fresh from the garden, but not bad for mass-production tomatoes.

6. I've had Ruskins when I visited my parents in Sun City Center
near Tampa. Excellent flavor.

7. Chives! A pot from last year that we stored
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 04:18 PM by jean
in the garage started growing while we still had snow on the ground.

It's warm enough now to have it out in the sun and I clipped some yesterday. Otherwise, it's still a bit cool to plant.

edit: I'm in Minnesota

8. Just radishes, lettuce ans a little bit of spinach.
Beet seedlings got et by the critters  My tomatoes and peppers are out, but not bearing yet. Does picking off the flowers improve root growth? Three of mine have flowers, but I doubt they are three feet tall yet. Almost.

13. And how!
One already had a bunch of pea sized fruit! I pinch them off, but it hurt. Two or three weeks and I would have had tomatoes!

10. Not a thing.
I got my first basil last week, but I cheated - bought a plant at the nursery. It's growing well, so I pulled some of the tops off for a pizza margarhita.

The apples are just starting to leaf out and bloom here (and we have a possible freeze coming, so we may be well and truly effed), I can see some very sleepy strawberry leaves poking out of their winter cover, and everything else is turning over and hitting snooze.

11. Nope, it's been too wet here in NOrthern California
to plant anything but rubber duckies and until that snow melts, I'm not taking a chance. We're still under a serious threat from flooding due to rises in the rivers from the spring thaw.

12. pea plants are about four inches tall
mache and rabe are about an inch. The cata already devoured the 4-inch catnip plant, even taking it out of the pot and chewing on the roots.

14. I am on my second planting already
Harvested the first crop of tomatoes last month, grape tomatoes still producing. Almost at the end of asparagus and lettuce harvest. Spinach is bolting. Pulling wonderful carrots right now as well as green beans. Collards since feb. Peaches are almost ready to be picked. Blackberries just turning black. Almost at the end of mulberries. Lots of huge peppers on my plants. But I live in Fl and when our growing season is done due to the heat you all will be in the middle of fresh veggie luxury.

15. I have a couple of nice banana peppers on a plant - just
ready for topping a pizza with some tomatoes and mozarella and hergs

and I have one good size bell pepper for the accompanying salad

and lots of green tomatoes

and more chard and collards than we can possibly eat - beginning to crowd my tomato plants so have been giving bags of this away

17. June is bustin' out all over in Georgia. It's too damn hot for this time
of year and although that might mean we'll have a good early start in our garden, we didn't have enough cool weather for our cole crops. The turnip greens and broccoli bolted before we got even a small harvesting, and the cabbages might rot before we get any. I put in 6 more tomatoes and pepper plants yesterday. The squash and cucumbers are coming up nicely. The beans and corn are starting to poke their heads out, and we gotta get busy planting okra and more beans. The strawberries have already bloomed and the raspberries are putting out leaves. It's a bloomin' riot around here!
