What did you have for supper tonight? (9/3)
Tonight we have Thai Noodles in Garlic Sauce. I grilled chicken and planed it on top with crispy wontons. We had a side of green beans and fresh salad with ginger dressing. It was delicious.

What did you have on your plate tonight?

4. It is pretty expensive but tasty.
The largest percentage of time I use it in a sandwich or salad. This, of course, is when I have fresh tomatoes and mozzarella. Balsamic is wonderful. It is nice that it is so versatile. I should use it more than I do now.

6. French Green Beans
French green beans are longer and thinner than most American varieties. They are also more tender and have a more complex flavor.

If you are unable to find them, substitute with the thinnest young green beans you can find.

They're quite long, considered a French type bean. My favorite green bean. Those plants are producing now.

Barbecued silver salmon, salad, Basque potatoes, corn on the cobb and what was left of the Wellesley Fudge birthday cake after the thief, caught in the act and reported earlier today on DU where there is a link to her picture, was forced to stop nibbling. 10. Pasta with a very DISAPPOINTING red sauce.
I had some nice ripe roma tomatos...they looked great
but just didn't have much flavor.

I used all fresh ingredients to make sauce from scratch,
and I could have done just as well with generic jar sauce
and my spice rack.

Bummer. :evilfrown:

11. Funny thing about 'fresh, ripe' tomatoes .....
.... unless they came fresh out of a garden, are of a properly tasty variety, and were truly vine ripened, fresh tomatoes almost always make a disappointing sauce. Most canned toatoes make a better sauce. Canned San Marzano's make the best sauce. Even Italians in Italy use more canned tomatoes than fresh.

12. Well, I got these at the local Farmer's Market...
...from a vendor I've always gotten great tomatos
from in the past. I don't know what the deal was
this time. :shrug:

Oh well, things happen, I suppose.
It wasn't like we didn't eat it!

13. I think jarred sauces are underestimated.
There are some really good ones out there!

14. There really are some GREAT ones.
IMHO, the good folks at the Muir Glen Co.
just can do no wrong, be it sauce or plain
canned tomatos (the Fire Roasted are my fave)

I don't know if they have some secret canning process,
or if they just use better tomatos, but they're
just amazingly good! A little too pricey for us
to use everyday, but we stock up when it's on sale.

And I think even the ORDINARY ones are better than they used to be.
My family was never wealthy, we had 'store brand' EVERYTHING
when I was growing up, and there were some real noticeable differences
in flavor and quality between those and the 'Name Brands'.

I don't see those differences so often these days.
The plain tomato sauce I keep on hand for everyday use
is the FoodLion brand, 4 for a dollar.
It'll never make a gourmet dish, but a quick trip to the spice rack
makes it the equal of any common Big Name sauce.

.... and this from a guy who grew up with mama making the genuine article once a week.

Most jarred sauces are pretty damned good. We've had a few that we'd not buy again, but none where like the old Chef Boy-ar-di watered-down-ketchup stuff of our youth.

We tend to buy the Safeway Select stuff. It is all consistently good and easily rivals any name brand stuff. Funny thing ... we tend to least like the ones by Barilla.

15. chicken salad with fresh basil and a cheese sampler
Chicken salad a la the Silver Palate although I used fresh basil instead of tarragon in it. Alongside were several wedges of cheese from the farmers market and some various veggies and lovely bread and olives.

Today I made 20 quarts of fermented dill pickles and barely made a dent in our pile of pickling cukes. Tomorrow I'm going to make bread and butter pickles and a recipe for a Hungarian-style "fresh" dill pickles.

Still getting early girl tomatoes. I used fresh mozarella from Costco, rather than the dried type. Very yummy and creamy. There's still a round of dough in the fridge for more pizza tonight.

On edit: It only got to 64 yesterday, so it was great to turn the oven on. We're socked in again today. Hoping it gets to at least 70 when the fog clears.

So, when I get real ones, I eat them until the acid burns tiny sores in my mouth. That actually happened once.

Those tomatoes came from a coworker before I moved and had a garden. She'd bring me a bag of tomatoes, and I'd sit at my desk eating them.

21. That Costco Mozz ..........
.... was it imported bufala? Our Costco was carrying some very small (and VERY convenient to use) balls of mozz made in Texas. It was actually pretty damned good. It was packed in three connected pillow packs, with all the whey as it should be.

Last time we went to Costco I was looking for that, and it was gone. I asked one of the food demo ladies if she knew where they had moved it and she told me they had an imported mozz in its place. I was even *more* thrilled to find that! I hope they continue to carry it, but you know how Costco and other 'clubs' do things ... here today/gone tomorrow.

That's all the mozarella I saw, unless they have a second cheese case. It's still better than what I got at the supermarket. It is three small balls in pillow packing but not what you got.

The disappearing products phenomenon is the only thing I don't like about Costco. I find something I love, and it isn't there the next time.
