So I'm working late tonight...
I finished the leftover seafood newburg that I brought from home, finished the salad I brought, finished the yogurt. Sick of snacking on nuts and chocolate through the afternoon, but still hungry.

I went to the lunch room and got into the box of assorted kinds of Quaker instant oatmeal, picked "Maple and Brown Sugar" flavor. Opened the envelope, dumped into a bowl. No brown sugar in sight, lots of white sugar in sight. Checked the ingredients list. The words "maple" and "brown" are nowhere to be found in the ingredients. The second ingredient is "sugar," which means white sugar. Well, at least it's not the first ingredient.

 :wtf:

7. I'd suggest the quick oats instead of instant
It cooks so fast and you can add some raisins and a dash of maple syrup as you fix it. It's almost as instant as the "instant" variety and at least you have some control. I like the regular style but am using the quick oats for my smoothies. It seems to hold me to lunch or beyond.

2. I remember making Fannie Farmer's "imitation maple" pancake
syrup back in the days when I was really, really poor. It was a syrup of brown sugar, water and vanilla, with the brown sugar slightly caramelized before adding the water. It wasn't bad, actually tasted better than any of the sugar syrups in supermarkets. It just wasn't MAPLE.

All packaged foods are going to be sky high in sugar and/or salt. It's the only way they keep any flavor at all after sitting on warehouse and supermarket shelves or in freezers for weeks or months.

So it's best to cook those instant oats and then doctor 'em up yourself.

3. remember mapleine?
It's a maple flavoring used for quite a few decades in baking and cooking. I can still see the little box in my mind.

4. Never used it
Couldn't afford the "maple extract" in my poor days, either.
