Mint Jelly
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 08:38 PM by hippywife
I'll admit I've never had occasion to try mint jelly. I know it's traditionally served with lamb which is way out of my budget. However, my husband's co-worker brought us a bunch of stuff that his mom canned and one of the jars says it's mint jelly and it does indeed have a green jelly in it. I tasted it and it really tastes like lime. Nothing even remotely minty about it. I even stirred some into my plain yogurt this morning and it tasted like lime flavored yogurt. It was very good but I can't imagine eating it with lamb.

My question: is this what mint jelly is supposed to taste like?

Okay, I know this is a really stupid question but I really don't know WHAT it's supposed to taste like. I expected mint. Ya know?

1. There's "mint" jelly...and then there's MINT Jelly.

Most are made with apple jelly, flavored with mint. This one, Polaner Real Mint Jelly, is the real deal...pure Mint Jelly...heavy taste of spearmint.

PS: I don't know what your husband's co-worker's mom made, but it sure doesn't sound like any mint jelly I ever had.

Lamb's becoming more commonly available, and shanks and shoulder chops are both tasty and on the low-price side of lamb. Leg of lamb and rib chops are still too pricey for many of us. I'm even seeing ground lamb a lot these days, which makes great shepherd's pie or greek-style burgers.

2. Thanx, Ms. Cajun.
At first I was thinking she made something and mislabeled it but then that's kind of hard to do when you're canning. And she seems to can alot!

3. You're welcome.
BTW, I edited my post sometime around your reply. You may have missed my lamb comments. :hi:

4. Hmmm...
Greek style hamburgers don't sound bad. I'll have to try that out. Never been a fan of shepherd's pie, tho.

Thanx, again! :hi:

5. after Easter, I bought a leg of lamb half price
...and it went in the freezer until Christmas. That's the only way I can bring myself to buy lamb -- half price.
