fun thrift store score today
I found a 14" across stainless steel colander for $1.99. It looked awful, had black gummy junk on it and it was all grungy. It is in perfect condition, no dings or deep scratches. I knew I had a can of BarKeepers Friend at home and bought it and shined it up.

It looks brand new and GREAT on the new pot rack

I also have been slowly over the last two weeks been replacing my boring cream dishes with the generic black strip

I now have 8 place settings of French or American made stoneware. 2 pink, 2 burgundy, 2 peach and 2 cobalt blue

and guess what?? H2AzDD6 had agreed gray walls with a white ceiling will look great in the room. I can thank Martha Stewart's paint book from KMart for that(and while I was there I noticed Martha's steel colanders 10" for $20!). He got scared off by the HGTV people, but loved the soft pastel looks in the MS brochure :bounce:

thanks to whoever it was that suggested Martha's paint palettes to tighten up the choices. (eleny? wildeyed? whoever it was THANKS!!)

1. Wasn't me
But your colander find is a "good thing"! Speaking of Martha, she's gettng out of the joint next month, huh? I can hardly wait. Maybe it'll revive the stories of how Gonzales smoothed it over for the shrub the four times he was accused of insider trading. But I really am a Martha watcher. Her programs always have a calmness and a soothing pace.

P.S. I was at the thrift the other week and found a small sized blue Pyrex bowl in good shape. Like this one
I found it at the old ARC I used to always go to. It's now the discount store. It was kind of sad to see the old store so empty. The new store is too pretty. I liked the old store with everything jammed in and you had to dig around. But nothing stays the same.

2. i have a yellow one (the size smaller) that I got from Grammy's
estate. It's all but got all the yellow worn off, but I still use the bowl all the time.

when I'm feeling richer though, I'm going to invest in a set of new clear pyrex bowls. I have a largish one now i use constantly. they are only about $10 at Target

3. my blue one is the smallest in the nesting set
i'm surprised that the blue is still on it. i'm going to use it for whisking eggs. those clear ones are nice. they'll look nice with your stainless and grey theme.

5. Yeah, nothing like a good find to brighten up your day.
I love thrift shops, but with two little ones, it is not much fun at all to shop. I have ebay, but shipping can get so expensive, sometimes it really isn't much of a deal at all.

I am glad H2AzDD6 has overcome his color aversion. I like Martha's colors allot, I used them in my last house. I had a nice soft pearl gray in my old kitchen. Wonder if you picked the same one?

6. we are leaning toward an almost lilac gray (with all my pink hehe)
she calls it "mercury glass"

and he is not "color phobic" after all i guess, he just didn't want anything loud and I don't blame him.

here is some of my "scores" this week

two settings of the cobalt blue, 3 of the powder blue as well as another loaf pan (so if the recipes makes two loaves, i have two pans LOL) a meatloaf insert for the loaf pans too.

the cutting board is lovely with the different strips of hardwood. it looked awful til I got it home and rubbed in some butcher block oil.

but that pizza/baking stone with peel by KitchenAid for $4.98 was the score of the week I tell ya LOL

I also got a great oval tray that says "Baked Goods" in tan, brown and red that goes well with my other "vintage" food signs :)

i am having too much fun, but still haven't found the bread box that was the "excuse" for the trip hehehehhe

9. Oh lordy, it is the same gray.
I remember now, mercury glass. Well it is really nice color, I liked it very much in my old kitchen. Nice mirror, BTW ;)

10. so the gray will look good with the bright white ceiling
ya think?

we are going to do the wall above the sink first. If we like that we'll do the areas under the cabinets next. If that works, we'll see if the whole room (which is one big kitchen/dining room that runs the whole width of the house) can handle the color

we'll start by painting the ceiling the bright white then work our way down :D

ahhh mirrors..... they are such mischief makers aren't they?

11. The gray should be great against white trim and a white ceiling
Consider a semigloss white for your ceiling instead of the usual dead flat white. It is less likely, over time, to yellow from food residue. And, if you're **really** ambitious, you can wash it.

12. I use 'dove white' from Ben Moore for ceilings and trim.
Clean looking white without being glow in the dark.

My old kitchen was enclosed with white cabinets, so the gray was not all over the place. But I found it warm and non-intrusive. I did the whole kitchen black and white, with a b & w checkerboard floor and white back splash with black accents. But when it came to the walls, white seemed too bright and black was out, too dark. So the gray was a nice compromise. Went with the decor, but not too contrasty.

Post pics when you get done!
