Speaking of stoves--
--anybody had any experience with modular stoves? That is, separate ovens and cooktops. Need to spend this year before income goes down next year.

1. I can see two major advantages
First, you can get different fuels, gas for the cooktop and electricity for the oven. Although dual fuel stoves do exist that do this, the separate cooktop and oven is a more economical way to go.

Second, think of being able to bake without stooping down all the time to look through the oven door and insert or remove things.

If you've got the space and funding, go for it.

11. I priced cooktops w/wall ovens vs all in one. IF you stick to extremely basic
components, you can come in less than a 30 inch 5 burner Jenn-Aire Dual Fuel double oven range.
http://jennair.com/catalog/product.jsp?parentCat=2&cat=69&prod=1628&PIPELINE_SESSION_ID=9a512400c0a850ac6dfc812dd93c1e2b...sometimes available at slight discount @ Sears

If you go to a double wall oven unit, w/self cleaning on even one unit it gets closer to even, and if you upgrade the cooktop to one of the easier to clean gas versions then you will be paying more, plus you have to reconfigure the cabinetry to contain the oven and cooktop.

Also if you are already limited in countertop, you will be giving up counter top to get the wall oven in.

Which is why when the time comes I am going with the Jenn Aire. Both ovens self clean, the larger one has convection and the small one (which is the handy one for the small jobs, like a pan of brownies, skillet of cornbread, just one casserole etc.) is the top oven. There are similar ranges on the market w/the little oven on the bottom.

I currently have oven w/cooktop and have redrawn my future kitchen in several configurations. By using this range I get more storage and counter space and a higher performance appliance for less cost.

If you don't want dual fuel, this range comes in all gas, deluxe all gas w/5 burners, regular electric and smooth top electric.

2. I have a double oven and a flat ceramic cooktop.
The house originally came with a microwave/oven over/under combo and the mikie died. I don't use the lower oven much, usually store cookware there, except on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I had lusted after a gas cooktop but found a deal on a new infrared+thermal cooktop and am happy as can be. Heats very fast, throws almost as many BTUs into a dish as gas and soooooo easy to clean up. Windex and a paper towel and you're done. If you're fast you can even wipe boil-overs up with a dish towel while still cooking.

I like the arrangement of having an oven at working height and the second oven is great for those special occasions and gatherings.

Put me down as a big fan of divided cooking!

4. I'm interested in this thread myself as I'm considering the same. I'm a few
years away from doing it, but I want an ultra-modern kitchen. Rather than a gas cooktop, I'm thinking about the Thermadore induction cooktop. I have induction-capable pans (Bourgeat Universal and Demeyer Sirrocco) to work with it. My investment in Bourgeat copper is gone, but I'm getting tired of polishing anyhow.

I'm interested in the replies to something other than a 48" all-in-one something,

5. Me also
I'm looking at redoing my kitchen/living room in the next 2-3 years. Like you, I want modern, even slightly futuristic design --but natural, I don't want an all chrome/black look either.

8. I owned an induction cook top several years ago. They're pricey
but I really liked mine as long as it worked. Heats fast, cools fast and no excess heat in the kitchen as the pot/pan is all that heats. Over time the energy level seemed to diminish and it is very dependent on cookware. I'm not sure if the energy loss was real or my imagination, but I'm told microwave inductors lose power gradually over time. Finally it broke and the company no longer offered repair so I was moved to go with the IR/conventional ceramic top. I've been happy with it so far but miss the gee whiz factor of induction.

Mine was really quite old, so I suspect that newer models are much better. I hope so as they are even more pricey than the one I had!

6. I had a Jenn-Aire stove top and a separate oven in CA
it worked well in that kitchen, the Jenn-Aire was on the island, the oven(s) in the main bank of cabinets along the wall

depends on your kitchen's configuration

7. That's what we have .... a cooktop and a wall oven
I like that the oven is high off the floor. No bending. The cooktop (like most of them) is sufficiently thin that drawers fit below them.
