What do you call the things you cook French Onion soup in, and,
where can I get them?

Y'know, the bowls you put in the oven.

I need a set. Looking for decent quality and well-priced.

Thanks friends! :hi:

1. Ramekins
but any oven safe pottery soup bowl will do nicely.

I use hand thrown jobs a friend made back in the 70s.

2. Actually ramekins are really too small and
not really suitable for handling. They are called French Onion Soup Bowls or Crocks:

3. I think so too
which is why I use the pottery soup bowls.

Restaurants seem to favor the glazed pottery ramekin on the right illustrated at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramekin probably because the French bread fills the entire opening.

4. Funny you should ask!

We just got some and used them for the first time tonight. They're imprinted "Le Gourmet Chef" and we got them at the store of that name at the mall. I can't find a picture of them online...

The usual ones are that brown glazed type, which scream "1970s" to us (uh, not that we would both even remember the 1970s of course), so we went with something different. They are red (they also had white) somewhat art-deco looking things, shaped triangularly.

AND, they were on sale! So were the brown ones, and some blue ones like the brown ones. If you have one of those Chef stores nearby, check it out.

6. I like the ones with handles. Do you have Home Goods there?
I found some nice Chantal crocks there. They are great for other soups and stews too.

7. Actually they're called "onion soup crocks" or some variation thereof
Ramekins are a little small, better for puff pastries, but you might find it listed that way. Onion soup crocks and/or onion soup bowls are actually what they're known by.
