    3. The names are funny
but I really don't know why everyone is still gaga over Ben & Jerry's. They sold the company to international food conglomerate Unilever years ago.

    5. In all fairness Ben & Jerry didn't sell the company the Board of Directors did
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 01:09 AM by MagickMuffin
Ben & Jerry didn't want to sell the company but they were overruled.

In 2000, the board of Ben & Jerry's sold the firm to a major conglomerate, Unilever. "They have a really good sense of humor," Jerry says of the ice cream-maker's new owner. "On the same day they bought Ben & Jerry's, they also bought SlimFast (laughter). Selling the company is not something that we wanted to have happen... but we were a public company at the time, and they offered so much money to shareholders it got sold."

Jerry Greenfield remains with the company as vice-chair of the board and director of mobile promotions and continues to oversee the work of the Ben & Jerry's Foundation. Ben Cohen also remains a force for positive change. His main project is TrueMajority, an enterprise aimed at reducing world poverty and hunger, promoting renewable energy and closing the gap between the rich and poor in the United States by making people more aware of the issues of the day.

I only mention this as I don't want anyone to think that Ben or Jerry "sold out" because they didn't. They wanted to keep the company as is, but didn't have much input with the decisions being made.

    :hi:

    7. They did give up control, that is true, however, they were disappointed that B&J's was sold
Unilever did agree to keep B&J's non profit for charities.

Still Unilever did change the ingredients and not for the better:cry: I still buy the Cherry Garcia on occasion, but not very often.

I prefer to make my own. But you already knew that :-)

And aren't you so glad? So many yummy options. I still want to try that browned butter ice cream that someone posted, I think either Tangerine or Empress maybe? :hi:

    9. I have a relative who was in top management there

Apparently, pre-Unilever it was extremely casual management (about what you expect when you get two hippies running the place :) ). Once Unilever came in, it got quite corporate. It was probably necessary to get corporate, but the whole culture of the company changed.

Unilever did agree to maintain the general charitable concept of the company; if only, perhaps, because that was the key to their branding.

Ben and Jerry still do charitable things around town.

My big complain is that they stopped selling Ben & Jerry's Brownie Bars. Damn, those were good.

    11. Lucky relative, well until Unilever took over
Never had a chance to try the Brownie Bar.

I like the fact Ben & Jerry used their social skills to adopt charitable organizations. That's what I loved about them.

I signed up for membership to True Majority when Ben first decided to get more involved in politics. Haven't been disappointed in the direction he has gone.
