Whats for Dinner? ~ Saturday the 28th
No clue here. Will be something porky though. Egg rolls, enchiladas or tamales are the most likely.

Just finished a HUGE salad for lunch, so I'm not really making a choice yet. :)

What's for dinner where ye be?

I got some fresh corn that I blanched and de-cobbed (is that a word? LOL) last summer that I'm thinking of pulling out of the freezer and doing a corn chowder with. I don't have a recipe so I need to hunt one down. It's very cold and windy here today.

Okay, we have a decision. I need to defrost some turkey stock and make a soup with some pasta, chicken and corn in it. No problem. :D

Hope your fella's feeling better this evening.

We're definitely doing egg rolls. Made with pork, cabbage, onion, and whatever else strikes Bills fancy.

And I made a pan of shortbread.

homemade soup and fresh Ain5 whole wheat semolina bread for the sick boy. As you can see I still am not getting the rise I want. Gonna have to tweak this recipe a tad more. Flavor and texture rock, tho.

I love eggrolls. I've only ever made them myself once a long time ago. I need to try them again. Care to share, darlin'?

32. Semolina is great in bread, too.
I had considered it for awhile but then Blues Heron kick-started it.

we need something warm...

and something slow and lazy too, with no place to go and nothing to do...

it's going to be a nice traditional cheese fondue with Ain5 and a glass or 2 of magic hat lager

come fruit and crunchy veg to round it out..

6. I'm going to a pot luck so the crock pot is filled with Ham Scalloped Taters
ala Ms. Hollandaise :rofl:


here's the basic recipe:

3 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (I used 4 med/lg bakers)
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup chopped onion ( I mixed 1/2 a medium yellow and about 4 green onions)
1 cup chopped cooked ham (I did more LOL)
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup water
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

to which I added a small jar of pimentos
a bunch of Mrs. Dash, some celery seed, some lemon pepper, some paprika and 1/2 pound sliced mushrooms

DIRECTIONS
Place sliced potatoes in slow cooker. In a medium bowl, mix together shredded cheese, onion and ham. Mix with potatoes in slow cooker. Using the same bowl, mix together condensed soup and water. Season to taste with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Pour evenly over the potato mixture.
Cover, and cook on High for 4 hours.

10. Some kinda 'Beef Bourguignon' type thing.
Had a package of little thick boneless "beef chuck cross rib steaks" that needed cooking. What did I have on hand? Red wine, onions, garlic, mushrooms, beef broth, tomato paste, noodles. So it's in the oven. Last gasp of winter, I guess... calling for "Record Highs" 71 tomorrow.

But finally above freezing (yay!). Cold nights because of the altitude. But we are the high mountain desert and dry, afternoons are warm and sunny almost all the year.

You don't want to know what it's like to try to grow a garden in rocks, though. And you don't want to know about herds of javelinas through the yard. Bunnies? Deer? Hahahaha!!!!! A dozen omniverous 60+ pound javelinas through the yard most nights. Their natural food is prickly pear cactus WITH spines. Imagine how they regard tomatoes and yellow crookneck squash! Yummm!



One big ol' fella took a dislike to my wooden gate last fall and simply shredded it.

22. I was going to say you had it easy...
until I saw your beasties -

Yikes! are they dangerous? eat small house pets? and how DO you grow a garden? on stilts? in a greenhouse?

The worse we have to worry about is some deer nibbling the shrubs and squirrels getting the tomatoes.... we use pepper spray on the plants - I don't suppose these creatures would find that daunting...

24. Well, they're sorta cute in an ugly kinda way.
They are not generally dangerous. Unless one of the big old guys takes a dislike to yer gate!

Or if they have babies with them (which they usually do). They are mostly slow, dumb and don't see at all well. As long as they are not cornered, they're OK. Not aggressive. I've had them rip off the skirting and get under the house, where they fart, grunt and rub themselves on the heat ducting, dislodging it. They are not usually a threat to domestic pets, though they really hate dogs and sometimes will charge to bad result.

Almost always, they are OK. But if I drive into my carport at dusk or night, I check before I get out, cuz I don't want to startle or corner anybody.

Some people call them "the pigs". They are not pigs. They are native American peccaries.

How to grow a garden? Most people here don't fence the entire property, leaving it mostly open, but fence a small area, to keep a spot for "Spot" to do his business and not get carried off by coyotes, and a place to grow irises where the javelina won't eat 'em. I have a small fenced zone within the open natural land.

I have always had kitties. Almost nobody keeps cats here, unless they're house cats that ya never see. Coyotes.

Growing stuff... Bajillions of wild bunny rabbits all over the place, nesting in the bushes. They get into the anti-javelina-fenced area and help themselves. I'm gonna have to try the upside-down growing method. Will try yellow crookneck, etc.

I will simply have to find a way to get along as best I can in THEIR territory. I started with one method... I'm growing sprouts! Hahahaha you javelinas and bunnies... can't get this!! Hah.

Well, I used packaged pure Mountain Lion Urine last fall, the most "reliable" repellant, without success.

Pepper does not in any way work. They love pepper and prickly pear. Yumm.

...some broccoli-cauliflower cheddar soup that's about to be started, and a fruit plate of apples and pears and honey tangerines.

I might have the energy to start a shaker lemon pie made with meyer lemons. Or not.

The first step in that pie is to slice the lemons very thin, sugar them, and set aside for 24 hours.
