Just watched Julia and Julie
What a wonderful movie.

I am assuming most everyone has seen this already and that Sparkly and I are late to the party. Meryl Streep was amazing. And the story was great. We really enjoyed it.

1. I could have done with a whole two hours of just Meryl Streep as Julia Child
My favorite line from the movie is when Julia Child exclaims, "I'm veeerry conventional!"

It has been a few years since I walked out of a theater feeling utterly satisfied. Damn charming film indeed.

2. Actually I did see it, but not
too long ago. And yes, I enjoyed it tremendously.

One part particularly . . . when she's finally accepted in the Le Cordon Bleu and on her first day she sees all the other chefs are chopping away with great skill and precision, she realizes her chopping skills need improvement. The next scene shows Julia in her kitchen and there's a huge pile of chopped onion on her kitchen table, and she's still chopping away. Paul comes home, enters the kitchen and tears immediately begin to appear in his eyes and he says something like, "a bit of an overachiever aren't we!" I LOVE that part.

I so admire Ms. Child. What a talented chef and what a very nice person.

5. Really enjoyed the movie AND watching the real Julia on her PBS cooking show.
As an American I really empathized with Julia's struggles with her "unFrenchness" - her large size and relative clumsiness and slowness, her open and childlike sweetness and enthusiasm in contrast to the petiteness and sharper edges of the French. This personal and cultural contrast also makes the reruns of Julia's cooking show with French chef Jaques Pepin (as well as their cookbook) most interesting.

Also found the brooding and insecure woman who challenged herself to cook like Julia an interesting character contrast to Julia's enduring optimism, fearlessness and lightness of being..although I found it a bit annoying at times.

Meryl Streep did a fantastic job. I'm guessing she had met/known Julia since they probably found themselves in similar local social circles.
And they are both beloved American female icons.
