I'm invited to a Sedar on Monday night. I want to bring something.

I'm thinking of an appetizer. Most of the ones I like involve cheese which isn't Kosher with the meat being the main course.

One Jewish friend recommended a chicken liver thingy which didn't appeal to me at all.

I suggested smoked salmon, which my beau said his SIL would *love* but his brother would absolutely hate.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

1. For a Sedar I would suggest bringing some nice Kosher Wine

More than likely your host/hostess have carefully constructed an appropriate menu that will satisfy the degree of observance they wish to practice that evening. There could be concern for example with the plate your contribution arrives on or the knives you used coming in contact with bread products.

I have family and friends who are quite strict with keeping kosher for passover but who normally don't practice. I learned a long time ago not to bring a thing into their home to share around the holidays.

3. I second the flowers but skip the Christian Easter lilies

The Seder menu is very cut and dried, few additions are appreciated although a bottle of Kosher wine might be acceptable.

A floral centerpiece would be appreciated, I should think.

These people don't drink and don't appreciate flowers as strange as that may seem.

I give a plethora of flowers to little kids who come to the farm to give to their mums. Gratis.

They are thrilled and it gives me great joy.

It's simply better that way,

I need foodstuff recipes that are non dairy.

I could just bring a salad I suppose.

But would like to do more.

6. Yum on the chicken liver spread

That's a very traditional Jewish dish. Spread on some matzoh... seriously. Reconsider?

And it's easy to make. Fry up the livers in some schmaltz (chicken fat), then saute some onion in the same, then grind it all together through a food grinder. Season with salt and pepper and you're good to go!

7. That's what my older Jewish friend had said.

I thought to add garlic, porta premarinated in balsamic vinegar and sauteed shrooms, and peppers.

She said to use Allen's or Alan's chicken livers.(not sure of the spelling)

She said they were the best.

Am not familiar with them and since I started cooking as a veg, there are some meat oriented things with which I'm quite familiar.

There are some things I'm not.

Maybe I'll go with her and your suggestion.

Yet you know, trying a new endeavor with unfamiliar people is always a stretch.

8. Keep it simple, if they've grown up with it, it was likely the traditional recipe

Just chicken livers, schmaltz (which you can render from chicken skin), onion and perhaps hard boiled egg, and S&P.

9. Tesha & Warpy are giving you good advice. Preparing foods "kosher for passover" is

a very exacting undertaking, not to be lightly attempted by the uninitiated. If they are very observant, they cannot eat foods you have prepared in your "unkoshered" home and you will be putting them in an awkward position which can cause hurt feelings. If they don't care for flowers or wine, they can always give either away the next day without awkwardness. Non-kosher chopped liver delivered on a non-kosher plate can be an embarrassment for all concerned.

These folks aren't ultra orthodox. They are more "reform" but they like to semi adhere to traditions on the holidays.

They wouldn't have a problem with anything coming from a non kosher kitchen and loved the chocolate birthday cake I made for my beau's and his bro's birthdays a couple weeks ago.

Nor did they have a problem with a kick assed veggie eggplant parmesan I sent to them last year.

Maybe I should just call them and see what they would like.
