Yesterday I found some Nutella at the grocery outlet store that I love, so I brought some home because I remember so many people here raving about it and I had yet to become a fan.
Well, late last night I decided I needed to eat some chocolate and really wanted to make some crepes to have with the Nutella. But it was too late and I wasn't up for it, so... I grabbed some low salt Ritz crackers and spread some Nutella on one and covered it up with another Ritz, and WOW that was really good! Sweet and salty, light buttery cracker cookie sandwich thingy.
But so today I made some crepe batter to keep in the fridge for the next time I get that late night urge. Then I got inspired and made this syrup (by now I was off the Nutella kick, those crackers took care of that) and so made one crepe (in a cast iron pan! had my doubts but it worked just fine, aside from the hefting to swirl) and tried this syrup and WOW was it fantastic. It was just a combo I had never tried before and it was really good.
Juiced 2 large oranges and zested 1 of them. Juiced 1 lime. Couple tablespoons of lemon juice (didn't have fresh). About a cup of sugar. A tablespoon or so of orange marmalade. A healthy splash of balsamic vinegar (probably 1/4 cup or so). Heat to reduce then add a few tablespoons of butter to smooth it out.
After I had tried it and deemed it a success, I ran across some frozen dried cranberries so added a handful of those, to add some texture.
So now I'm thinking: a crepe with a thin smear of Nutella, rolled up and some of that syrup drizzled over it...
