You are NOT going to believe this
I was fooling around and entered a recipe contest. I checked my voice mail and I just found out I'm a finalist in a recipe contest. It involved a quick and easy meal and you HAD to use Ragu spaghetti sauce. If I win I can go to New York AND I would receive a $5,000 college scholarship. That would be so very helpful because I want to return to college to get my Special Education certification.

I just about cried when I heard I was a finalist. I don't know the particulars or anything but I will tell you when I know. SHHHHHH. Don't tell my husband. I haven't told him yet.

Thank you so much for being a supportive place.

11. Thanks for lots of things, underground.
Somehow Julie has special teaching skills, as do you, apparently.

Her dad and I talked about it yesterday, she's a NATURAL! AND she has learning differences! so she somehow doesn't just understand but is able to convey!

I remember when she was being interviewed for h.s. (She and her sister attended private/parochial schools in DC area, and there were/are 2 high schools with programs for 'needs' kids, where we/she applied.) Program director asked 'what would you do/how would you handle this' question of her. Keep in mind, Julie was being interviewed to be accepted into the program as a highschool student. I sat there with the biggest grin on my face, as I listened to my 'little girl' recite her 'recipe!' She's ALWAYS had it! (She/we decided to attend the other h.s., but the first one contacted us several times, obviously hoping she'd select them!)

17. Since the girl's name
is part of the case I will use it.

I taught Christy in her senior year of school. Walking on egg shells means that teachers were afraid they would say or do the wrong thing and the father would haul them back into court. After he won the school basically had the unwritten policy that anything he asked for would be granted. If he asked that all teachers wear green then we would have been told to wear green. That's how much they didn't ant to get hauled back in court.

Christy was an easy girl to love. She has Downs Syndrome and she wanted to love everyone. I met her sister who was in the service. Her sister came to visit me and tell me how much Christy loved me and her gym teacher. (He was new that year too). I guess everyone else was afraid to interact with her because they were afraid that Dad would take them back to school.

Funny thing, I actually learned about this case in an education class. We just learned a little about it and I didn't even connect the two until her Special Needs teacher told me.

18. How lucky Christy is, to have such a Dad!
Decision of 11th Circuit Court of Appeals:

Greer vs. Rome City School District (11th Circuit Court, 1992)
Court stated "Before the school district may conclude that a handicapped child should be educated outside of the regular classroom it must consider whether supplemental aids and services would permit satisfactory education in the regular classroom." Parents said the school determined the child's "severe impairment" justified placement in a self- contained special education classroom. The district argued that the costs of providing services in the classroom would be too high The court sided with the parents and said the school had made no effort to modify the kindergarten curriculum to accommodate the child in the regular classroom.. The court said that the district cannot refuse to serve a child because of added cost. The Court also said school officials must share placement considerations with the child's parents at the IEP meeting before a placement is determined.
