Grrrrrrr,,,,,Green Peppers, $3.59 a pound. Who are they kidding?

The red ones were only $4.79. Gee, grocery shopping was fun this morning. I changed my menu, nothing with peppers until this madness ends.

1. Around here they charge by the pepper, not by the pound

and, since I'm trying to eat up all the veggies in the freezer so I can get a new fridge, I haven't looked lately at what they cost.

What we need is a government that will subsidize stuff that's good for us instead of fattening corn based agribusiness to the detriment of the health of the entire country. That Big Mac should be twice as expensive as a vegetarian dinner. Subsidies are what make it so much cheaper.

Just think about getting a huge sack of fruits and vegetables every week without going into the poorhouse for them.

4. Not organic. Organic fruits and veggies are in another area.

I never looked at the prices of those. Organics are always more expensive here.

These peppers were all huge too. One big pepper, 3 to 4 dollars? Nuts!

I was chatting with several other shoppers and all of us passed on the peppers. This increase is, in my mind, unacceptable. About 2 weeks ago, regular green peppers were .99 a pound.

I very much doubt that there is a shortage.

3. They should be coming in season soon in most areas

Peppers and herbs are two things which are very expensive at the store, but are ridiculously easy to grow yourself even if the only dirt you own is in a window box.

6. 2.99 here, for green,

3.99 = red, 4.99 = orange and yellow. Didn't buy green, but these will make my supper tonight, w. avocado, tomato, crackers and cheese.

10. one place I shop has red peppers for 1.99-2.79 and they always look good,

too, not scary huge. The green ones are usually much cheaper. I wonder if there was a storm somewhere where they are grown - Mexico, etc.

The large commercial grocery has red peppers usually for 4.99 so I don't buy them there. I only buy them on sale. I suspect it has something to do with where they are grown and are in season. It really makes you think more about buying things in season locally - we belong to the community share here in the summer and it has really opened my eyes a lot about trying to buy local, in season and not expect to buy everything all year round.

7. The pepper prices get insane sometimes

I usually keep a few bags of the frozen tri colors from Trader Joes in the freezer for just that reason. When you can find them those bags of mini peppers from Costco are also a great deal and they last a long time in the fridge.

11. Look around for small ethnic stores. There are several

Middle Eastern stores here and I buy lots of produce there. Bell peppers go for .50 to .60 each and tomatoes for .75 to.85 a pound. You generally have to use them pretty quickly as they are quite ripe. Not a problem with peppers tho, cause you can freeze them with no prep other than coring and seeding them. They'll be soft when you thaw them but for cooked recipes they work just fine.
