So, what's for dinner?

We just finished, except I gotta clean up the mess.

Organic T-bone steak. It was over a pound so we split it. Cast iron skillet, butter, Worcestershire, red wine, salt, pepper, garlic. Yum! Fried up some thinly sliced potatoes and onion in butter and olive oil in the other cast iron skillet, added some chopped button mushrooms and chopped orange pepper towards the end. When they were done, I turned off the heat and topped them with white sharp cheddar and parsley and let that melt while I made the salad. Served with a dollop of Greek yogurt. Coulda made a meal out of those alone. Green salad from the garden with a balsamic vinaigrette.

Was all very yummy and the puppies enjoyed the trimmings. :)

10. Howdy, Mz. B.!

She is part of a litter a co-worker's dogs had. One is a black lab and the other is a border collie. There were nine and she brought them into work a few at a time until she had given them all away. She did keep one, tho.

She was born March 10th. We've had her for about a month. It's been a really looooong month! :rofl:

I love all animals but I am primarily a kitty lady, as you suggest. Still wishing I had another kitchen frog. ;)

And she and her big sister shared the fat trimmings. The bone is a little much for her yet. Still has teeny, tiny puppy teefs. Sharp little buggers, too.

Let's see - what have I been up to? - I'm still unemployed, still looking, lurking DU but not posting much, watching the baby hummingbirds at http://phoebeallens.com/ (got to see one of the eggs hatch a couple weeks ago - now that was an amazing experience! These babies grow SO fast, it's totally amazing). I'm baking a little - right now I'm totally in love with a Whipping Cream cake (think I posted a picture of it here a while back). Getting some physical therapy for a right arm that hurts for no reason. Yearning for another dog but so far I've managed to refrain (due to finances and where I'm living), although I've come close to committing myself to one. I'm in love with Tibetan Terriers and want one SOOOOOO bad! I lost my dear dog-friend of almost 16 years in December and the adult I rescued last year and I get along but are not that bonded. Waiting and wishing it would warm up here and give us more than 1 sunny day a week! In other words... just doin' "stuff"!

24. Really sorry to hear

that the unemployment continues and the arm is hurting. Had the same problem with my left arm a while back. First it was the shoulder joint, then the elbow, then the wrist with aching radiating between the joints. Doc put me on a once a day anti-inflammatory called meloxicam and it works beautifully. Hope it gets to feeling better for you soon. :hug:

I had to look up Tibetan Terriers. Very cute, but more hair than I would want to contend with. I can barely keep up with my own. :rofl:

I'm lucky enough here in Portland to be able to purchase 40% whipping cream at Costco, so that's what I use. Then I'll cut a slice (or two) real thin and serve with either jam or cinnamon-sugar and a dusting of powdered sugar. So delicious!

Yeah, TT's have a lot of hair! I'd probably keep it clipped. That's what I did with Nakita, my recent dog. In his prime he was 120 lbs and hair that was about 6" long - almost pure white with this big black nose - he was such a beautiful dog. But, like you, the long hair was more than I could deal with so (when I could afford it!) he went to the groomer's every month. My current dog is an Old English Sheepdog - she's smaller (about 70 lbs) but I keep her clipped too. My vet keeps wondering why I don't have smaller dogs - I can't help it, I just love big long-haired dogs! A TT, of course, would be much smaller. They're like PBGB's - clown dogs.

What is the texture like? I may have to give that a try soon. I can get fresh cream through the coop, and I think it's 40%. It will sit in the fridge, unopened and turn into clotted cream. And it so very sweet.

34. It's a finely textured delicate cake

I have one use for bleached white flour in my life - and that's for cakes. Because the slight acidity of bleached flour gives a finer texture and greater height than unbleached or whole wheat flour. The recipe calls for cake flour but I use a blend of bleached a/p and corn starch. I know you generally use unbleached with some added ww, so you might be interested in this info about how to "substitute" for bleached cake flour.

For each 1 cup/ 3.5 oz/ 100 grams of cake flour you can sub
- all purpose flour (3/4 c = 3 oz = 85 grams) plus
corn starch (2 tbls = 0.5 oz = 15 grams)
OR
- all purpose flour (3/4 c + 2 tbls = 3.5 oz = 100 grams) plus
additional baking powder (3/16 tsp) (in addition to what the ingredients list calls for)

I am always surprised by how finely textured this cake is because I am NOT good at folding flour into cake batter. Somehow it always seems to work out fine with this cake. It always seems to take longer to bake for me than the time given in the recipe. The only trouble I've had with this recipe is thinking it was done when in fact it wasn't. I've baked the cake both in a 10-cup bundt pan and a half-recipe in one of those foil loaf pans (waxed paper in the bottom). I've used Baker's Joy spray in my pans and haven't had any problem getting the cakes out of the pan after letting the cake cool in the pan (sitting on a cake rack) for 10 minutes or so).

I've made my own superfine sugar by processing the sugar in a food processor a bit.

Saturday night dinner is a couple of trays of bread and cheese and fruit and veg and condiments out in the garden with neighbors.
Tonight we added an artful sangria created by Mr. Tesha, mmmm.

We we were also visited by a whole bunch of chipmunks and an old black cat who preferred our cheese to chasing them.

12. Had pizza delivered. I blame the dogs!...

We had an event this morning which had us up at the crack of dawn.

We got home from that to discover that the diva lab bled all over the deck with a bloody back paw. We weren't sure we could properly clean it so we took her to the vet. They had to knock her out for stitches and the bandaging. (It was a deeper cut than they first thought.)

My big bear (our other dog) had eye surgery recently and had JUST been freed from his elizabethan collar so we used it on the lady. I swear he gloated that it was HER turn!

My diva cried all afternoon, poor thing. I was just plain tired so I ordered pizza. We haven't done that in a while.

I'm sitting here remembering I'm supposed to be feeding my Amish bread starter...but that may have to wait until morning. :)

I saw your pup in the lounge. LOOK how big now. I know you are having some fun!

Your story about Bill anonymizing your tomatoes reminded me of my husband's puzzlement as to why I was color-coding our boxes when we moved. He didn't seem to get that detailed labeling and coding of the boxes would help us put things in the right room for unpacking (and if/when we needed to retrieve something from the storage unit, since it wouldn't all fit in the house.) "We'll just figure it out when we get there!"

Unlike moving, gardening is fun, so at least your version of figuring it out when you get there will be kind of an adventure. :)

Dinner? A real treat. A young neighbor woman and I were talking the other day about the handwritten cookbook she has from her immigrant Italian grandmother. Yesterday she made lasagne from her grandmother's recipe and brought a biig pan to us for tonight.

I can't eat much of it because of the carbs but it is pretty good. I'll get a look at the cookbook next time I see her. I'm hoping it has a lot of real old recipes. I do know the grandmother was Sicilian.

dinner at our house is at noon, and we had brined, grilled thin pork chops with mashed potatoes, green beans (from last year's garden--cleaning out the freezer, you know) cucumbers in yogurt, a wonderful cantaloupe, radish/tomato salad and hot biscuits. For dessert, there was a homemade pecan pie that was left over from Christmas (another gleaning from the freezer).

The potatoes sounds extra yummy and I'm going to have to make them.

I made fish. I was trying to make 2 tilapia fillets last 2 meals, so I stewed them. I sauteed in olive oil onions, garlic and red peppers. I then added a chopped ripe tomato and the fish fillets cut in pieces. Then some salt, a little chili pepper, white wine and let it simmer until done. As a last touch I added green Spanish olives cut in slices. I served it over rice and with some broccoli. I meant to make a salad but was too tired.

The pooch is adorable!!!
