Sigh. I am a frugal person and am having a difficult time giving myself "permission" to drink it.

Encouragement would be welcome.

1. Have you stored it properly all these years?

You might just want to open it to make sure it hasn't turned.

If you are a meat eater make yourself a nice steak to go along with it. It also would go well with a Bolognese sauce with pasta but I'd think about making a fresh tagliatelle with a wild boar ragu. Do you happen to have any wild boar laying around in your freezer?

If you have some Parm laying around melt that on top of the burger. The salty cheese will go really well with the wine and the beef and make it much more delightful.

3. We had two bottles of 1987 Rodney Strong Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

They were given to us by a friend who had two cases cellared.

We have had it several times over the past few decades when there were special things to celebrate or mourn. The two bottles we have are the very last of the cache. They had actually been misplaced and for several years were improperly stored, cork up in a too-warm spot in his basement in Los Angeles. He knew they might be bad, but asked if we wanted them anyhow. I wanted them if for no reason apart from the memories of the times shared over those very special bottles.

We opened one. It was beyond "undrinkable" and made vinegar seem palatable by comparison.

The last surviving bottle is in my office, in a place of honor, still corked, but without any hope of being intentionally opened.

Wine has a life and a death. I hope yours is still good.

5. Even if it had been stored properly and were still potable...

it is actually a waste NOT to drink it. It would actually be the antithesis of being frugal to spend the money on it and then not enjoy it. Permission enough? ;)

Wowza! Being of meager means, I've never tasted a wine like that before! Goodness! I'll post more about it later, but thank you for your encouragement, even though I already partook. All I can say for now is YUM-YUM!

9. in matters like this I follow the Pooh Rule

Winnie the Pooh always had to eat to the very bottom of a pot of honey because you never know if there might be cheese at the bottom (and that would be a bad thing).

In my family, we use that saying to excuse ourselves: "There might be cheese at the bottom!"
