I feel an obligation to let my fellow Texans and foodies know
that our great state's super-duper market H.E.B. (also owners of Central Markets) now offers....
drumroll........Chocolate Blackout Cake!!!!!! I have seen this legendary N.Y. cake discussed a great deal in various cooking chatrooms and so I perused the web for a reputable recipe and was
going to pick up the ingredients the very day I discovered that they offered it in their bakery! Crazy serendipity! I asked what company is making it for them but they wouldn't say.
But it's not baked by H.E.B. It's baked FOR H.E.B.

I've been wanting to try the recipe for some time so I went ahead and got the ingredients.
But I also bought a slice of their multi-layer Blackout Cake (only saw it offered by the slice). And I want to tell you that it was awesome! And far too rich to finish in one sitting.
I'll be able to compare it to my own version soon, but I'd be hardpressed to go through all the steps to make it myself again when their's is so good, except for very special occasions. I hope mine is at least as good as that bought one.

Call your H.E.B. and see if their bakery is carrying it. If not be sure to request it. This company
also makes an amazing carrot cake and vanilla cake for them (also sold by the slice). And if anyone can pry the baker's name from the guys and gals in the bakery, please share it here.

2. what is HEB?
And why would they not want to reveal the name of the baker? Here, supermarkets post the bakery of origin on their specialty cakes. It's a matter of boasting that a cake comes from Delfina's or Marsee Bakery or JaCiva or whatever.

The groceries don't reveal the name of their bakers because they are usually factory bakers like IBC (Hostess) or Dawn Foods who does all the bakery items for WalMart, or at least did when I was in the trucking industry and we were picking them up for WalMart.
