Any way to de-salt a ham slice?
For the 3rd night in a row, I have been unable to sleep because of incredible thirst. I bought a prepackaged ham slice, a national brand that posted a 'lower sodium' banner across the package.

One slice for me will be 3 meals. I buy a package of about a pound, divide it into thirds. This will serve me with a veggie and salad for 2 nights. The third, I make an omelet with ham, green pepper and diced onion.
I always soak the section to be used in water for several hours. Seems to me it used to work. Since I don't buy ham often, maybe I have this wrong.

I have been so incredibly thirsty that I have had to get up several times for another glass of water.

Last night was the worst, I gave up at 3:30. Not much to do at that hour except play around on DU.

I wonder if ham is gone from my menu forever. I don't buy a big ham because I'm cooking for just me.
It tasted great but I can't go through this again. Any ideas?

1. I don't know what to tell you except to reduce the amount you eat
at a sitting and think of it as a flavoring, rather than the main event. Having sleepless nights because of frequent trips to the water faucet to try to drown the pig are a pretty common occurrence. I know my mother used to complain about it whenever she'd pig out on ham during the week when my dad was on the road.

3. Just a guess here
I would say pulling the salt out of ham would be hard. I screwed up a stew once by over-salting. I didn't want to toss the meat, so I added potatoes, carrots, and water. After a while I took those potatoes and carrots out and put in new. It seemed to work in my situation, but not sure how desalting, what sounds like, processed ham would work for you.

I'm gonna guess eat earlier in the day, drink lots of water, and pee a lot or eliminate the ham. :)

:hi:

4. Processed foods use way to much salt...

and sliced ham is one of the worst.
Its used to increase the water that the meat holds,
thus the weight is greater and they can charge more.

If you still want to use it, try using it in a casserole
like ham and potatoes, or ham bits in a soup, and don't add salt.

Other than that? Maybe take a nap!

5. I know you said you soak your slice
But have you considered also cooking it by simmering it in water. This also pulls out some of the salt.

6. I think I'm out of the ham slice market. The last 3 nights were awful.
The words low sodium on the package meant nothing. I bet somewhere in my subconscious there is a faint remembrance of this problem from years ago. Don't think I have bought s slice like this for 5 years.

Never thought to simmer it but thanks for the tip. Still think I'll avoid it altogether.

8. I would just use it for seasoning.
Chop it up fine and use a bit in scalloped potatoes or potato soup.

Or you might try soaking it in milk.

One use for ham that I love is ham loaf. Grind the ham and mix it with lean ground pork. Bread crumbs, some dry mustard and an egg, and a bit of milk. Bake it like a meatloaf, and baste with brown sugar-vinegar glaze.

I might have to buy some ham just to make ham loaf.

7. Try soaking overnight and changing the water a few times
That's what I do with salt cod, one of the saltiest foodstuffs in the known universe!

9. Soak it in milk.
I soak overly salty feta cheese in milk...and it does take the salt out.
