The Holiday Turkey Steps Out for a Smoke.
Edited on Thu Nov-11-10 12:38 PM by elleng
WHY haven't we heard of this until now???

'Greenberg Smoked Turkey, founded in 1938 by Samuel Isaac Greenberg and now run by his grandson Sam Greenberg, will sell about 20,000 turkeys to walk-in customers this season, priced at a little more than $4 a pound. Beginning on Monday of Thanksgiving week, a line will snake down the street and into the working-class neighborhood that surrounds the plant. To alleviate parking squabbles, Greenberg employees will shuttle customers about in golf carts.

For an independent producer that has built a reputation on pit-cooked poultry and personalized service, that may seem like a lot of turkeys to smoke and a lot of logistics to manage. But local sales are just the tip of the wing.'

The turkeys sound delicious. I think that I may order one and have it sent to FL for Christmas since I'll be there for the holidays. Please let me know how it tastes.

4. Man that looks wonderful!
If we already didn't have our turkey breast in the freezer, I'd get one. It's just the two of us so we don't eat enough for a full bird before it's past it's prime. But this looks so good, I'll get one sometime.

Indeed! Will wait a few months before ordering. I saw that 5-pounder and almost ordered, but I'd rather not freeze it.

Much better pricing than where I have been shopping. Thanks for the link!

But we love their ribs! http://www.smokehouse.com/burgers.nsf/item/Hickory-Smoked-Whole-Turkey

5. My brother has been smoking his turkeys
outdoors for years.

Since we live out in the sticks, it's not a big deal. He's got a firepit setup out of cinderblocks, some racks and corrugated steel panels for a hood. :D

He uses hardwood: oak, pecan hicory, whatever's around.

It is delish!

:9 :9

This year however, I'm going to futre MiL's place. SO cooks their turkey every year.
