I've just recently become familiar with his work, and wondering if there's anyone here who has an opinion as to his ideas, or s documentary called "Food Matters"

The little exposure I've had, I'm finding it somewhat intriguing but curious as to the experiences of others

1. I had it in my queue at Netflix.
Then we dropped it before I got a chance to watch. Meant to reasearch it but haven't gotten around to it yet. I am seeing health benefits from certain foods, so super foods sort of make sense to me. Have you found any good websites?

2. While David Wolfe is smarter than the average new age
nutritionist, he is still out of his field in this stuff and his ignorance of medicine shows up frequently.

I'd say if you like some of his recipes, enjoy them. If you're looking for a lifestyle, look elsewhere.

His acid/base theory is especially ludicrous since acid balance within the human body has to remain in an extremely narrow range or we get sick and that range is controlled by lungs and kidneys, not juices.

Searchers looking for health and nutrition gurus can find them very easily. However, they need to be aware that most of them are full of shit.

5. Thank you!
I'd found it somewhere online for $4.99, but free is even better!

6. Just watched it. I'd seen a great Gerson documentary at Hulu recently
Edited on Sun Dec-12-10 05:15 PM by Lucinda
so I was familiar with a lot of what they talk about. http://www.hulu.com/the-gerson-miracle

In May of this year, I developed really bad joint pain in my right shoulder and hip...by the end of the summer it had traveled to my knee and was in the same joints on my left side. This is debilitating pain. I've had cancer and major surgery, and this is tougher in many ways. I've had every test that my doc can think of with no real diagnosis. I'm on pain medication now and have been researching joint pain and inflamation. I'm finding that I am able to reduce the intensity of the pain through the addition certain foods, but I am still on prescription meds.

Even though i was sitting here roasting marshmallows today :P, I have made a big effort to incorporate more fresh fruits and veggies into my diet while reducing processed foods and meats. It is helping me make actual progress in reducing the pain, so I think there is enormous value in looking at nutrition.

I have had megadose Vitamin D in the past, which did help, but as a rule I don't do well with vitamin therapy. But, in my case it may be more an issue with the cornstarch filler in the tablets than a problem with the actual vitamins.

I think there is a lot of common sense in what Gerson taught.

7. Oh man, Lucinda!
You have really been through the ringer!

One day last February, I woke up with a pain in my upper arm, where there had never been a hint of anything before. It continued getting worse until I finally went to the dr. He ordered an xray (which of course showed nothing), and sent me to physical therapy. I was a good PT patient, did all my exercises and kept my appts for about a month but it only kept getting worse. I had some improvement after the very first session, more after the second, and by the 5th treatment, my arm was almost back to normal. Gotta tell you, I was astounded and it made a believer out of me! Not that I think it's a cure-all for whatever ails you, but it's great with pain and some other things. Might be something worth looking into for you.

I'm glad to hear that you are experiencing some relief with the addition of certain foods, that alone speaks volumes. I agree with you, when a body needs help, nutrition can help a lot! I've recently found some liquid (juice-like) vitamins at Costco that I've been using that have been real helpful for me, just add to morning juices and mix in.

I'm glad to hear that you're taking care of yourself so well this afternoon/evening and that you're prepared in case you get a lot of snow. It can be fun to watch from the warmth of the indoors but a terror to be out driving around in.

Stay warm,

8. I just watched the film at the link you posted.
Thanks. Very interesting. I will look into this. I'll
probably get the juicer out of the barn tomorrow.
I think I'll try this juice thing.

9. I had joint pain also.....interesting story.
I feel for you. Joint pain is a dull ache that nags at your very being.

I also had pain in places that were not at a joint and were
muscle related.

I had good luck with chiropractic before but this pain
wouldn't quit. I went to a massage therapist thinking that it would help.
It didn't help. She explained that my muscles were in knots. The
knots were in my back behind that big wing bone. She couldn't get
to it. I gave up and figured I would just have to live with it. A life
bathed in pain is a terrible thing to face every day.

I was working on the house one day and hammered to close to a
hive of bees and one came out and stung me on my pinky finger.
My hand swelled up within an hour. Next day I was swollen to my elbow
by the third day I was swollen nearly to my shoulder.

Time to go to the urgent care facility.

My sis in law took me there.

They gave me a shot of steroids(prednizone) and some steroids to take
over the coming week. The swelling went down and I was back to normal in
a couple of days. All was well. My back and joint pain was gone also.

Months later I had a doctor visit. I asked was it the bee sting or
the steroids that cured my pain. She said it was the steroids. She said
steroids were an excellent anti inflammatory.

I am starting to feel that back pain again. I'm gonna ask for a round of steroids. The last round kept me pain free for for 2 1/2 years.

I'm not sure how this fits with the original train of thought on the
original post but I thought I should mention it.

Steroids are hard on the liver but I figure if it's only for a week
every couple of years it may be worth it. Also wondering if
a better diet would make the steroids unnecessary.

10. You might do some research on anti-inflamatory foods
There are some foods that that can help reduce inflamation, and they can make a big difference.

11. So sorry your joint pain is so difficult to manage.
Edited on Mon Dec-13-10 12:21 AM by pengillian101
I have arthritis and osteoporosis, and a prescription I have is for a once weekly dose of Alendronate Sodium. My doc also said to daily take 1 Aleve, 1500 mg calcium and Glucosomine Chrondrontin. That was six months ago.

My knee and hip still was painful most days, so I switched brands of a Glucosomine Chrondrontin to a max dose of Osteo Bi-Flex and it seems to help alot. It's maybe not the brand so much, as the max dosage. http://www.revolutionhealth.com/drugs-treatments/osteo-bi-flex

Hope you can find some relief!

(edit to add Alendronate Sodium)
