Blizzard Cuisine?
Hmmm -- what sounds like a good meal to make in the middle of a blizzard?

Forecast for my area between Tuesday PM and the wee hours of Thursday AM is for a total of 13-19 inches of snow, with winds of 40 mph.

Now, I know for a fact I won't be working on Wednesday, because I am NOT driving 15 miles each way through that kind of weather.

So, what sounds like a really good meal for a blizzard.

Right now, I'm thinking maybe good old fashioned chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes, and either peas or green beans, with perhaps a shredded carrot and raisin salad on the side, and maybe an apple pie for the dessert.

1. I made Pioneer Woman's chicken and dumplings in spite of
the fact that they aren't dumplings...and it was good. My family lapped it up during SnowJam 2011 a few weeks ago.

Since then I have not been able to find apple cider. I hope it isn't seasonal. However, I think I could use apple juice and some spice for the same result.

3. That does sound like a good recipe. I may try that.
I like the concept of cider and tumeric together.

Yes, I'm sure that if you just used apple juice, it wouldn't affect the flavor at all. Apple juice is just cider filtered to remove the solids, rendering it clear. Now, in the "old days" cider was just cold pressed and bottled, not heated or Pasteurized, and so would taste "fresher" than apple juice. To my knowledge, all commercial cider is now Pasteurized for safety, so it won't taste quite as fresh as it used to, and tastes more like bottled apple juice anyway.

6. I love her recipes. I've made dumplings like that forever
More like a steamed biscuit but that's how I've always known them to be.

I just might have to make some now LOL

Thanks for sharing that recipe.

7. You're welcome! I like this recipe better than the old southern style...
gummy flour dumplings swimming in broth but don't tell my aunts that!

2. I'm in MI also. I've got some home made chicken
soup and some beef stew already made. Did an apple cobbler yesterday, enough for 8 people LOL and there's only two of us.

I'm right on the I-94 corridor and it looks like I won't be going to work tuesday and wednesday. I'm just a tad south of Jackson and work in AA .. snow days!!!

stay warm.

4. Well, I'm not too afraid of Tuesday.
But I already said I'm going to go in an hour early, so I can leave before the worst of the Tuesday PM rush hour traffic, which gets really slow in the snow here in the Detroit Metro area.

Wednesday, no, I'm just NOT going. My boss generally calls a snow day if his wife is off work anyway -- she is a teacher in a local district, and there is no way it WON'T be closed with 10 to 15 inches of snow.

5. Tuesday is a concern for me as I work 2nd shift
I may (probably) end up losing 2 days work. I'm not taking chances. It's not worth it.

10. I cleaned out the fridge yesterday, hoping to find ingredients for
Garbage Soup. Alas, everything that had slunk off to the lower back had turned completely to slime and the yogurt from August didn't do it, either.

Tomorrow when it's snowing and the temperature is struggling to hit 30, I'll just do another potato soup. I found all the stuff for that one, including a pint of whipping cream to make sure it's really rich.

I'm ready. I have plenty of batteries for the head lamp and CD player and lots of spinning and knitting to do.

Watch it just be dry and cold. The desert can get really depressing when it's too dry.

11. I think it'll be a roasted chicken

We found a nice big one with a $2.00 off sticker on Sunday shopping.
We'll put it on the spit early on Wednesday before the second part of the
storm gets going, and every time Mr Tesha comes in from shoveling he'll say - "Oooh something smells good!"

12. Big pot of stew ready to heat up. Also chili and cornbread can hit the spot.

And a batch or two of peanutbutter cookies can turn a blizzard into dream vacation.
At least for me.
Hmmm....I just talked myself into it! hehehe

I'm roasting some veggies and game hens as I type.

Happy blizzard to you and all in its path. :hi:

14. It's coming down here like crazy, 'cept...
Edited on Tue Feb-01-11 02:02 AM by hippywife
it ain't snow yet...it's freezing rain. Pellets making loads of noise hitting the house and windows. There was even thunder and lightening for a while. 'sposed to have about a 12 to 18" of snow on top of all this ice when it's all said and done.

My boss already knows he ain't seeing me for a couple of days. We are tucked in for the duration.

I think you've got some great suggestions already. How could one top chicken and dumplings or chili?

Stay safe everyone and pray we all have power in the morning. :hi:
