Easy Way to Clean A French Press Coffee Maker

I love my French press, but cleaning it isn't easy. The problem is the wet coffee grounds at the bottom of the French press, which is a narrow, cylinder shape. Shaking it and turning it upside down only gets part of the grounds. Rinsing it with water works, but where to put the water/grounds? I don't want to pour it down my sink as I'm afraid of clogging my plumbing.

A person can get their hand in the French press with a paper towel, but it's hard to move it since the container is so small in width.

Added Bonus: Water Compost Pile or Plants

So I came up with the idea of adding water to the French press and putting it in a used orange juice container. Two rinses and the coffee press is clean. Now to water the plants, which I thought should be acid-loving, like rhododendrons, azaleas, and conifers. In doing a little research, though, I find that the grounds are pretty acidic and after some initial watering, it's best to switch to putting the grounds in the compost pile.

but your idea is the same except we just pour the mixture in our compost bin.

2. This is what I do:

1. I remove the plunger and run it under a light stream of faucet water. The grounds go into a small sieve under it.

2. I take a rubber spatula that's designed to sprape food processors (scooped, not flat -- see pic) and carefully remove the grounds directly to the garbage.



3. Whatever little is left inside the glass base is mixed with a little water and then run through the same small sieve. The grounds are added to the garbage.

Been dumping the grounds down the sink for years, along with tea leaves.

Not a problem.

Of course using the grounds as fertilizer is great.

But they're not going to hurt your plumbing.
