Does anyone juice? I could use some combination suggestions :)
I have borrowed a friends juicer - all the meds seem to be making me worse and I'm going to do what I can nutritionally for a while - and am looking for any favorite combinations to try. I will mainly be using veggies - with green apple. But I would love any suggestions you may have.

I learned the too much celery in the mix equals = icky lesson yesterday.

TIA
Lucinda

1. I'm not juicing per se
Edited on Sat Jul-02-11 03:58 PM by housewolf
but rather throwing whole fruits and veggies in the vitamix along with a little juice or water, and I use more fruits than veggies.

But I also buy Odwalla's Superfood juice, which contains all kinds of things - Apple juice; peach, mango & strawberry purees; spirulina; vitamin c (ascorbic acid); wheat grass; barley grass; wheat sprouts; jerusalem artichoke; lemon bioflavinoids; nova scotia dulse.

There are tons of juicing sites on the web, I'm sure you'll find many that will please your palate. Here are a few ideas: CAVEAT - these are from my vitamix book and I haven't tried any of them, just thought they might give you some ideas.

pineapple, green grapes, some pear, some avocado, a bit of broccoli, some fresh spinach

green grapes, romaine lettuce, apple

green grapes, a bit of cucumber, some kiwi, apple, some fresh broccoli, some lemon

green grapes, small lime, a bit of yellow pepper, apple, carrot, fresh spinach

lime, banana, fresh spinach, apple

red or green grapes, orange, pineapple, carrot, fresh spinach, apple

carrot, apple

Good luck with your juicing, Lucinda. I'm so sorry to hear that your meds make you feel so bad. I hope that juicing helps.

Edited to add:
Here's Dr Mercola's page on juicing

4. Thankie much for the suggestions and the Mercola link.
Very useful!

After the ickiness of too much celery in my first attempt I thought I'd ask for some favorite combos. You'd think that it would be pretty intuitive, but some things are just weird together in juice form. :)

2. I'm another Vitamix whole food juicer
Every day....Same thing

Organic Baby Spinach (a big handful)
A whole apple, skin and core
a bit of fresh ginger
and a big squeeze of lemon

I've tried to play with adding celery and carrots but you really can't improve on the perfection of the simple blend of spinach, ginger, lemon and apple.

3. Thanks for the response!
It sounds like a delicious combo! I went crusing around watching Vitamix videos after these two posts. I've borrowed a juicer and the Vitamix looks like a good option for me when I return this one!

10. A less expensive althernative to VitaMix
if money is an issue, there's another good machine called a Blendtec
http://www.blendtec.com/

I'm on a Yahoo group for people who make a blended food diet for those tube feeding. By far the favorite machine is the VitaMix, but there are also folks who love their Blendtec. I haven't used both so I can't compare, but I suspect a Blendtec would serve your needs if a VitaMix is out of reach. The 3rd machine folks on the list have used is the Ninja, and there have been folks who've been satisfied with it too, although they tend to wear out fairly fast.

Good health to you!

If you're interested in doing some exploring, you might be interested in this site

and explore the world of manuka honey, an antibiotic honey from New Zealand with some interest healing properties particularly for stomach issues (though I'm using it for some nasty skin spots that a dermatologist wants to cut out and am seeing some remarkable changes). There's tons and tons of alternative information out there (see, for example http://www.earthclinic.com/), but one needs to do research and be discerning 'cause something that may work for someone may not necessarily work for someone else.

9. That is one of my juice faves if I don't do pineapple!
Delish!I also sometimes like lime, instead of lemon, with apple and ginger.

She gave me a terrific tasting glass of green last weekend that included: arugula, ginger, watermelon, banana and parsley and it was very satisfying and good tasting. I felt healthier within minutes! (just kidding, but it was vitamin rich) Feel better, darling.

On edit: fixed clumsy sentence

8. My favorite is pineapple kale or pineapple spinach
Heavy on the fruit, just enough of either green to cut the sweet.
Yummy!
