Who knew you could keep celery for practically forever!

Ok, so I may be the last person to know this, but I stopped buying celery because it would get limp and unusable so fast.

I had bought a whole *thing* of it a few weeks ago, and within days it was a limp mess. I did a google search and found a hint about cutting it up and putting it in a ziploc bag with water in the bottom of the fridge.

Well, I just found it - two weeks later - and, other than the ends, is as good as new! Great surprise for the chicken salad I am making with leftovers!

If everyone else already knew this, well, just ignore me.

1. I wrap mine completelly in foil

Celery stalks last a long time when they're wrapped in foil.

2. It will stay fresh like 6-8 weeks in a "Green Bag".

Most of that "as seen on TV" is pure crap, but those things really work. And, they now have dollar store generic versions that work just as well, and are far cheaper. Reusable, too.

3. I agree with you about the Green Bags. Did not know about the

Dollar store offering. Which one, Dollar Tree I hope? I like that store because they offer a lot of good options to the grocery store brands of things

4. I can second the efficacy of the el cheapo versions of the "Green Bag".

I've tried both the pricey ones and the dollar store versions and they work equally well. The dollar store ones are actually YELLOW, not green, so don't let that throw you. I buy mine at our local Dollar Tree, so I'm assuming yours will stock them too.

They also work well for keeping fresh bread happy on the counter for a day or so. And cheeses from hardening. I've heard they are good for meat too, but being a vegetarian I can't speak to that.

I love my green (YELLOW) bags. :)

5. Thanks for the confirmation. I make a list for Dollar Tree and go

once every few weeks. I post the note on my refrigerator door. This current list includes
Doggie bags,
Eyeglasses-an extra pair I keep in the car. Don't last too long but serve the purpose.
Dish washing Sponges
Quick Eraser sponges(better than the $$$ ones.)
Zip lock bags
Hydrocortisone cream. Same size as the drug store version, same product.
Triple Antibiotic Cream--same as above
Batteries
Dish soap
'Sun' Non-chlorine boxed bleach bleach
Special Occasion cards, always 2@1/1.00
Sometimes the item is not is stock but our local Dollar Tree tries to keep inventory filled.

some kind of green bag and I noticed a big difference, too.

They absorb ethylene gas, the naturally occurring substance that is a plant hormone which promotes ripening and senescence in plant tissues.

This technology has been used in the cut flower trade a long time.

Some grocery stores now have "green bag" produce bags -- some Kroger stores in my area do -- who hoo, free green bags -- nothing like double or triple bagging the produce!

I get fresh fruits and vegetables about once very 2- 3 weeks, so anything I can do to keep them fresh longer makes a huge difference to me.
