So what should I look for to make sure my kid (due in March) gets ZERO melanine in his formula?
My wife will breastfeed, but wants to add formula to the kid's diet.

You will need to do everything possible to support your wife so that she can really get a good start with breast feeding.
There are also old fashioned recipes for formula that those of us from the old days were raised on. There was also an organic formula I found once, but it was supposed to be for babies over 1 year old. You could check with your doctor to see if as a small supplement it would matter.
It is a group effort. Get connected now with a good lactation specialist or your local chapter of the La Leche league to help out.
Good luck with it all.
