Getting Linux to work with wireless
Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 08:57 PM by hobbit709
Is there an easy way to get it see and install drivers for my wireless PCI card? Tried both Suse10.1 and Ubuntu 6.04. I'm not a Linux geek and if I don't know how to do it I can't convince others to switch.

1. The key word is "easy"

And no, not unless your wireless equipment has a chipset that has been reverse engineered or is made by a company that either offers Linux support or opens up enough of its driver base that others can utilize it.

That said, on SuSE, you can follow these instructions:

http://nextgen.no-ip.org/~andrew/linux/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapperinfo10-32bit.php

The key to making it works is using the supplied drivers and then using ndiswrapper for them.

It may look daunting, but it isn't really. This kind of procedure will work with any Linux distro, just not the SuSE specific instructions.

steps you have to take initially, as mentioned, but it's automatic after that.

5. Give Ubuntu 6.10 a try...
...I couldn't get my 802.11g card to work until Ubuntu 6.10. 802.11b worked fine. If that doesn't work, you can use TCP wrapper, or the driver from Linuxant which will cost you some money.
