I'm playing with ubuntu 11.04 alpha 1

I'm liking firefox 4 pre release but not caring for the unity menu scheme though so I switched back to the 10.10 menu. I don't use my computer for anything serious so I like to play with the new releases.

Theres just nothing quite like trying out something new. :-)

Updates threw me for a loop so I had to reload and this time I'll wait a few days before I run updates again but other than that its working fine. firefox 4 comes with some new security built in so for that I'm happy. I normally run without keeping any history and with only a few sites allowed to put a cookie on here so I'm pretty much taking care of the security lapses that 4 is addressing but I'm happy to see that they are working on that.

1. I've been using the firefox 4 beta since it came out. Every now and then

an update borks something, but for the most part it works pretty well.

2. I installed it a couple days ago and waited until this morning to update and all went well

updated to kernel 2.6.37-8.21. Theres still many issues but the basic OS is working fine. Firefox 4 is definitely faster but it seems my whole computer is running faster. When I click on the main menu, now, it's right there, really fast loading especially the system/preferences and administration, sub menus where with all the different versions of ubuntu/mint I've used it was rather slow there.

I'm using the main menu in the top panel rather than the menu bar as I like that better.

I got an email from ubuntu saying to wait until they had kernel 2.6.37-8 ready before updating as there were bugs in 2.6.37-7 . The first couple times I tried updating, still using 2.6.37-7, after loading Natty I wound up with a broken system but not this time.

I love playing with these new versions as they're being built/created.

3. OK -- I've downloaded the live dvd and am burning the iso to disk

I'll pop it in an old machine for a test tour and let you know what I think

4. I gave the live dvd a spin from a thumbdrive. I don't much like the new menu system:

it's hard to load the sidebar with very many applications and have it remain usable

5. I'm using the classic desktop instead of unity

my screen is only 17 inch so unity takes up too much of my desktop space. I'm hoping you can help me on a problem. My last update hosed my grub. I have 10.10 on another partition with autocad loaded on it and I use that but this last update to kernal 2.6.37-10.24 I came away without a way to boot into my 10.10 partition. I know there is a way to fix that and I've done it before but for the life of me I can't figure it out how to this time. I went to terminal and sudo apt-get install grub and all that but to no avail.
I've got another buggy design that I'm hoping to build or at least get started on this next week and my plans are on autocad on my 10.10 partition. I can load autocad on this 11.04 partition I'm sure and copy the file to it but I'm rather get my option for 10.10 back in my boot loader. Any ideas as to how I can do that would be greatly appreciated, in fact I'll be so grateful that I'll come dance at your next wedding ;-), kid'n, just being silly on this Saturday morning :-)

6. your bootloader is completely hosed? or you just lost the menu entry for 10.10?

be careful looking for advice, because i think it's all grub2 now

7. I finally gave up and reloaded

got my boot loader back so I'm back in business.

This new version, 4.0, of firefox is definitely faster even though its still in beta
