Having trouble. Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old computer that had Hardy Heron working ok.

When I installed Hardy Heron a couple of years ago I got a home page and everything was right there to get going. With Ubuntu 10.10 I get command lines and I'm clueless about what to do since I don't know any commands. It would have been nice just to get a page I could surf from just like with Hardy Heron and that was what I was hoping for.

So, what to do, what to do, what to do?

1. I've never had any trouble installing from ubuntu livecds

Lots of people here know more than I do about this, but they're all need more info

Do you have a CDROM? Did you use the livecd? Or did you use some other install, such as a usb thumb drive install?

Can you boot the livecd without doing an install?

Is this an install using the whole hard drive? Or have you installed beside existing operating systems?

How is your hard disk currently partitioned?

How old is this machine? How big is your hard drive? How much RAM do you have? What else can you tell us?

2. All I really wanted from this was to be able to have Firefox so I could check my email

and get online while my computer is in the shop. This is an old computer (maybe 8 years) that I had put in a new 80g hard drive. It previously had Hardy Heron and that worked ok. After I had loaded that I got the page with the Heron on it and everything else and was able to get online with Firefox.

With Ubuntu 10.10, after I load it from the cd to be the OS (it is the only OS and not alongside any other, no partitions) instead of getting a page like with HH and having everything right there I get the command screen instead and I don't know the commands. Right now I'm using 10.10 off the cd because at least I can get on Firefox that way which is really all that I wanted.

3. So you can boot off the live cd but a full install doesn't work?

I assume you chose "use whole disk" when installing?

Did you have wired internet access during the install?

Did you check the md5sum of the maverick livecd iso before burning to disk, to be sure it was error-free?

7. A successful install of the desktop or netbook versions wouldn't require you to know any commands

to boot to a usable desktop, if you installed the right thing, so one natural guess might be that the file you downloaded (and burned to disk, to get the livecd) was somehow corrupted

There's a standard way to check that the downloaded file is uncorrupted: you look up what the md5sum is supposed to be, then you compute the actual md5sum, and, if it isn't what it is supposed to be, you download the file again. It's all pretty easy to do, and if you download linux distros (or various other big files) now and then, it's worth a web-search and some reading to learn about it. Since it sounds like you don't currently plan to do anything like that, I won't bore you further

5. Thanks for the attempted help. I have my pc back and am happily using Windows.

Hopefully I won't have to deal with Ubuntu again. I know many here love it and are happy with it but I am happy with what I have that works.

Next time I'll have a backup quarterback that works for me.
