I've been using it since dec.3 last year as alpha 1, eagerly awaiting this day I might add. Its different but different in a good way. Those early days were some trying times too cause they were making so many changes from 10.10.

This is definitely a distro to check out if you're a Linux user. Hell, even if you aren't.

4. I think it's great!

I'm glad the people at Ubuntu got the video fixed. I screwed up three installs trying to get Ubuntu 10.10's video to go bigger then 1024x768. 10.04 it worked fine... even installed Xubuntu and it worked with the res went up to 1440x900. Like it is now 1440x900

Seems to be pretty snappy system. Firefox is also nice.





Test system is a system I got at a garage sale for $25.00. Compaq P4 2.4GHz with 1gig memory on a 20gig hard drive. All I had to add new memory.

3. How different is it from the beta 2?

I've got the beta in virtualbox right now. It looks OK, so I'll probably upgrade an ubuntu box to natty

But I'm getting to the point that I like seeing why different distros offer. I put debian on my notebook, after trying ubuntu, mint, and arch on it. I've got knoppix on a really cheap Foxxcon box. I've put arch on another cheap box, using openbox without a desktop manager (since I liked the look-and-feel of archbang and crunchbang), and I've been seeing what I can do there, which is a good learning experience

I think ubuntu is a good distro, but if they move to unity, I'm really going to want to be able to customize it

Do you alway burn isos to CD or DVD to install? I generally try to see if I can get the distro on flashdrive by using a utility like unetbootin. I recently had trouble doing this with one mobo and had to create the flashdrive using lili in a windows 7 environment

5. pretty much the same

I don't have a flash drive so I usually burn a dvd as 50 dvd cost only a little more than 50 cds do. I've got a one gig SD card and a reader and I put damn small linux on it for a while just to see if I could. I was surprised that an SD card would work but it did without any problems. I had to use a free program from HP that made the SD or a flashdrive bootable. I can't for the life of me remember what the file was called that did that but I think its pretty easy to find using hp, flashdrive boot or something like that in the search box.

I've set this up to use the Ubuntu classic no effects desktop rather than unity right now though but I'll switch that back and forth periodically until I get comfortable with unity. I think once I figure out how to customize it I'll be fine with it too.

I don't use my computer for anything serious except for using Autocad and I've got that down where I can reload autocad using wine without any hitches so I don't mind trying the new distros as with each one I find I like linux a little bit more. I like the way that Ubuntu doesn't seem to work the hard drive as much as what XP used to do when I had it on here.

9. How do you do that?

So far I don't like Unity. I don't like all those things popping in off the left of the screen. I just like a simple drop down menu. I have yet to find the power management option.

7. Downloading as I type

Still running 10.04. I use a dual boot system as I have programs that don't run with WINE, and with all the updates it's getting cumbersome scrolling down down to get to the windoze start option.

8. I used to dual boot with xp so I could run AutoCad

but one night I set my mind to figuring out how to get autocad to run using wine and after much head scratching and ass thinking I finally figured it out. Took notes so I can repeat the process and now I no longer use any windoze. I have AutoCad 2000 which was written for the windows 98 environment so I had to run it in compatibility mode anyway so what the hey. Actually it runs as good using wine as it did with xp under compatibility mode.

This morning I finally had some updates to install for 11.04 not bad considering its been 5 days since it was released.

12. Tried repeatedly to upgrade my maverick installation to natty

With the GUI, a stinking window finally popped up that wouldn't fit on the screen completely, so I couldn't access the buttons to tell it to proceed. Alt-F8 + arrow keys didn't help. Repeated guesses about how many times to press TAB before RET to activate the (presumed) continue, rather than the (presumed) cancel button didn't work: it always canceled

Stupid GUI!

Finally resorted to the command line in terminal:

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade

11.04 and AutoCad doesn't play well together so it was go back to 10.10 for me.

15. Depends on your hardware

Unity depends on Compiz, and that's a beast if you don't have good video hardware, a good CPU, and a goodly amount of RAM.

Unity works very well on my machine. Unfortunately, if I want to play any games that use 3D acceleration, it appears I will have to turn Compiz off completely. Compiz and fullscreen gaming has never worked very well in my experience.

I'm not sure about how much I like Unity. It makes Ubuntu look and feel like a touch device. My roommate took one look at Unity and said "It looks kind of like a Mac". It certainly does! With all the OSes moving in a touch-enabled direction, the change makes sense, but I'm not so sure it's a good fit for Ubuntu.

I do like the way the menus are organized, though. Everything seems a lot cleaner and more intuitive. Of course, I started using linux waaaaaay back in the days of RedHat 3.0. Talk about a nightmare! I barely got that configured properly, and I "made" my geek creds by getting Enlightenment to work properly with ATI's drivers (!!).

And there's still a noticeable difference in performance.
What I don't like about Unity is that it looks too much like Aero and I don't particularly care for pretty eye candy.
