Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 2

I'm playing around with this this morning and even though for some reason unity isn't working for me I'm loving the speed everything works at. I think if I get rained out today from my outdoors projects I'll install and dual boot so I can continue to play with this. I'm using a USB stick this time to run it from where in the past I would be using a dvd so I don't know if its the usb or what but this is the fastest ubuntu I've used yet. I have 10.10 on my hard drive and this one running from the usb stick is way faster than it in surfing the web.

2. It's predistribution and seems a bit buggy to me. I get constant messages "this or that

had a problem and quit or shutdown unexpectedly. Would you like to report this?" and then if I say "Yeah,. report it" the systems tells me "Oops! Can't!" Sometimes these pop-up error message windows freeze and there seems to be no option but hard reboot

The slider for sound volume in the upper panel doesn't work

Gnome sessions don't work. I tried installing openbox-session but I couldn't get an openbox session to work either. For some stuff, I get long lists of obsolete packages -- but update-manager will only do partial upgrades. Restart after a partial upgrade left my machine in limbo and I had to do a hard reboot

6. I haven't but I will

Our Internet has been off for the last couple days and just now back up. Years ago when I bought my first computer back in the dos days I used to make a ram disk with my upper memory, I had 1 meg of memory which dos only used the first 640 and then made a batch file that loaded AutoCad10 and ran it from the ram disk and it sure did make AutoCad fast. This was in '89 when my first computer was a 80286 with 1 meg of ram with a 20 meg hard drive. I had to add a math co-processor to run AutoCad with. Hard drives had just come out or got down in price where a person could afford one, can't remember which. I do remember it being a 5.5 incher though. Complete with a 12 inch .025 pitch, what they called a flat screen monitor back then, all this cost me $1270.00. I had to buy the math co-processor separate and it cost right at $200.00 more. I could fit AutoCad 10 on that ram disk, amazing isn't it.
Anyways I thought I'd throw that in.
I've been wondering if Ubuntu supported a RAM disk and now that I know that it does I'll be adding one and doing as your link, Thanks :hi:

I've got 2 meg of ram so will I want to use 512 meg. For the most part all I do on my computer is the internet and AutoCad2000 using wine which I haven't added to this install yet. I'm dual booting with 10.10 and I have AutoCad on it so I may not put it on here as the last time I tried when 11.04 was first released I couldn't get it to work for me so I had to go back to 10.10.

Thanks I'll do this first chance I get tonight or in the morning and do it to my 10.10 partition too. I'm hoping that with the updates now that 11.04 will let me run autocad and if it does I'll remove the 10.10 partition and just have this one on my HD

12. By "ls /home" I mean: open a terminal and list the contents of the directory "/home"

by typing el es space slash aitch oh em ee return

you should see a list of files and directories in the directory "/home"

13. I'm having a problem with saving my changes and closing out the terminal window

I've been hitting the shift key then the o key and then the shift key again then the x. Maybe I need to strike them at the same instant. First the shift and o then the shift and x. If not help me out here as I so want to do this as I see it as a way to not only speed up browsing but also in making it a more secure less intrusive environment.

Also I only have 2 gig of memory so I was wondering if I can substitute 256 for the 512 and 512 for the 750 in that change. Maybe even go to a 384 and 512.

14. (1) If you're using nano as the editor, you can save and exit by pressing

ctrl-x (depress control and x keys simultaneously); this will ask for confirmation (y or n); confirming y, you will then be asked to enter the name of the file to write (but this is probably already correct)

So a typical save-exit sequence for nano is:

control-x
y
return

(2) Dunno for sure but I think you can set size=<anything up to half your ram>

(3) Look at the mount manual for "mode": http://linux.die.net/man/8/mount

It looks to me like "mode=" sets file permissions. I don't know why you want to change "mode=750" to "mode=512" -- I think "mode=750" gives the file owner full access, the file group read and execute access but not write access, and everyone else no access; I think "mode=512" gives the file owner read and execute access but not write access, the file group read access only, and everyone else write access only

I was just curious about the numbers is all on the question about the changing the numbers.
What I did this morning was to do this at the link I have here and it seems to have helped in speeding up firefox but I'd really like to make a ramdisk and use it like the link you provided does. Anyways check this link out if you would when you get a chance and let me know what you think if you don't mind.

Have I mentioned that I love linux today. I love Ubuntu!
I started on dos 3.1 way back in '89 before windows was a gleam is gates eye.

I went to a friends today and he wanted me to clean up his new computer with winblows 7 on it and I was afraid of doing anything as it seems so strange to me . I played with 7 for a bit when they were developing it, for a couple weeks or so they let anyone who wanted to down load it to try it before they released it to the public and I did that but I didn't play with it enough to get comfortable with it. So I told him he needed to take it to this computer place near here that have a pretty good reputation and have them to de crap it. I never seen so much shit on one computer in my life. All just crap too. I also told him if it was me I'd go to the ubuntu site and download and burn myself a copy of ubuntu and wipe the hard drive clean and put it on if it was me. He has no computer knowledge at all so it wouldn't be much of a stretch for him to learn ubuntu instead of 7. Then I could help him get set up where he could enjoy his computer a hell of a lot better than he can today. He is going to give it some thought and more than likely do that. I hope so anyway then when he calls and asked me question of what do I do here I will be able to say something except I don't know windows7 so I don't know. Window xp was my last windows and 7 is a far cry from that.

7. Same thing I did for the same reason so I replaced it with 11.04

Plus my computer is too old for unity as it wouldn't work which is odd as I'm posting using ubuntu 11.04. Unity works in it but I'm using the classic desktop instead as I've not warmed up to unity yet.
