ubuntu 11.10

I downloaded the daily build of 11.10 this morning and put it on my computer and am using it to post with. It has Thunderbird as default which I like, Unity is working for me now. It has Firefox 6 and Thunderbird 6 as defaults. How cool is that?
anyways in case anyone is interested.

It'll take some getting used to but I think I can live with unity once I figure it out.

1. I've been running 11.04 on one of the systems here and IMO it's the

most stable release yet. Thanks for the info on 11.10! I think Ubuntu is doing a tremendous job!

2. Couple hints

DON'T mess with the Compiz control panel. I have discovered that Unity likes the desktop effects set to the defaults, thanks, and you can easily create problems by experimentally turning effects on or off vs. those defaults.

Unity also dislikes fullscreen apps- especially when run through WINE. If you're going to do that, change the desktop to Ubuntu Classic (or whatever it's called) when you log in.

I like the Unity desktop, it's just not stable enough for the things I try to get working in linux. YMMV, as always, but I've shown it to a few people (from both linux user and non-user camps) and the design of it appealed to all of them. The non-users found it far more intuitive than the stock Ubuntu desktop, and Mac users in particular were at least intrigued by the Apple-esque feel of it.

4 stars out of 5 from me, only for the effects issues when you're "breaking" the defaults or going fullscreen. But then, that may only be my particular software and hardware configuration.

3. I can't wait as tomorrow is Alpha 3

I'm loving this new version of ubuntu so far. Since I've made the switch to ubuntu I've been testing the new releases as soon as they start working on them and this one is by far the most stable one at this point. Can't wait until October to get here other than its wishing my life away that is. I like that in this release evolution is gone with thunderbird taking its rightful place up front.

I've found that during the Alpha and Beta stages its better to leave everything along as far as making any changes are concerned. After its released I'll hack it to death though
