I finally installed Ubuntu 11.10

I did change it today to the classic version.

And I admit I was a wee bit hyperbolic in my criticism. I didn't yet realize that even Gnome 3 is apparently being geared more to the tablet, or at least to that paradigm, rather than the desktop computer. So I guess I owe a bit of an apology to Mark Shuttleworth.

I installed the Oscillating Ocelot or whatever around midnight, and I found myself in the wee hours of the morning before I could get my puny dial-up internet connection activated. I was a bit grumpy by then... and a few adult beverages may've been consumed... but I'm not telling.

10. I wish I'd found that instruction when I was trying 11.10

For me with an okie accent and used to okie accents in people I converse with that was hard to understand what the guy was saying though.

Now that i have a link to go back to the gnome desktop I might just try 11.10 again
I think I'll boot to 11.10 and see if I can do this. I'm down with the crud so this would give me something to do today :-) to get my mind off the cruddies for a while

But then again I'm a full-fledged believer in socialism, in the Western European model, so I probably don't get it. :)

I was kind of surprised to see commercial software being sold on the Ubuntu Software Center. And even more surprised to see that the Ubuntu Software Center doesn't recognize a puny dialup connection as legitimate. :(

6. I'm not fan of 11.10 either, but...

...Ubuntu hasn't done anything to Linux (except, of course, get it more exposure with regular desktop users). If you don't like the direction Ubuntu is taken, there are many other Linux distributions that may suit you better. Nothing Ubuntu has done can change that.

7. I agree with you

Right now I've been trying to find a window manager / desktop I can live with under Ubuntu.

I've tried the legacy version of Gnome, KDE, enlightenment, and xfce. So far, I'm liking xfce the best. But I've only been playing with it for about an hour.

I killed my windows partition. Hopefully for good.

I'm thinking my best plan might be to split my smaller HD into two main partitions, and use them back and forth to do a LFS build every six months to a year. Maybe using a pal's faster connection to dl the source packages... I go over there once a month, at least, anyway.

The new Gnome is pretty as hell, but it just seems so impractical to me. And KDE seems to be heading in that direction too.

If you have a suggestion for a window manager/desktop that I've overlooked, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

It's light and fast, but you can still pretty it up with compiz ;-)

I really like Enlightenment e17, too, but it's not quite as reliable (still under heavy development). If you like tiny distros, try Bodhi linux. It's Debian+Ubuntu-based and uses e17 by default. Plus it comes with only a bare minimum of pre-installed applications.

Funny, though...looks like you're a more advanced Linuxer than I am if you're doing the LFS thing! I've considered it on a few occasions, but haven't yet taken the plunge. I guessing you'd recommend it?

11. I used LFS for years

From about 2000 until about 2008. It was very educational about how Linux works. But I finally got kind of fed up, with keeping the whole thing up-to-date. Library dependencies nearly drove me crazy. Or maybe they did. That's kind of up for debate. :)

I just found out about what Mint Linux is doing. They've added something onto Gnome 3.

I haven't tried it out yet. It hasn't officially been released. But they are trying to marry Gnome 3, which is very attractive from I've seen, with the more practical aims of earlier releases.

I'm waiting for the official release, which should happen in the next few days. But it sounds great. Linux Mint Lisa.

Doesn't hurt a bit that I've had a couple of girlfriends named "Lisa." :)

I hope that it is fairly self-contained, and that the main Gnome developers will merge it into their source tree.

9. The menu in the top panel is relevant to whatever program you have running

if you are online then that menu is firefoxes menu. If you are running another program that menu changes to whatever program you're using.
I didn't like unity and I'm back to 10.10 as I couldn't get wine to run AutoCad right in the later versions. I use AutoCad and I must have a computer that runs it or else I'd be back on windblows

12. It's an absolute piece of garbage. I've been in computer R&D and support for

decades in Unix and also using Linux since the beginning. This is the worst I've seen from Ubuntu. It's unmanageable and about the most unintuitive garbage I've seen. I would kick anyone out of my dept. that came up with this release. I'm going back to Debian.

I've been noticing Ubuntu going downhill for awhile. Another one on my list is bloated memory hog Firefox, for that I'm switching to Opera. Far more robust.

14. UPDATE: Unity is what was driving me up the wall. I actually went back to KDE. Loaded

Kubuntu 11.10 and it works perfectly!!! Also, my Firefox 8 works perfectly under Kubuntu 11.10. Soooooo, I'm happy to be happy with Ubuntu and Firefox again. IMO Unity sucks, it's not ready for prime time yet IMO.
