1. thanks for the link
Appreciated.

But I've asked some younger friends why most video games these days seem to be mostly all the same. Meaning "first person shooters," where the object is to blow everyone's brains out.

I get the reply that anything else would be boring.

There is something wrong here.

2. Well... Non-violent FPS's do exist and can even be "big" games
One of the biggest FPS's of the last year is Portal 2, a puzzle solving FPS that is also very funny.

It is true though that many FPS do use violence as the basis of game play. I'm not sure that the reason you have been given is correct though, I think the reason is that it is difficult to put other types of non-violent games into a FP setting. Things such as puzzle games are just being figured out how to make the game playable while putting it into the FP construct. With the advent of larger wide screen TV's becoming more popular as well as more widespread broadband, some sports games are making some great advances. Tiger Woods 12: The Masters mixes some great 1st and third person views (on consoles, the PC version is really a different game and not as advanced) for amazing visual effect and game play, very addictive. Also, some of the football, baseball, basketball and hockey games are making great strides in getting full team vs team games going.
