1. Could you recommend a distro for a newbie to Linux ?

I use unix all the time at school but I haven't made the leap to installing a distro on my home pc.

2. Start with Knoppix. Runs from CD, no need to install

You can get the hang of it without risking the data in your HD.

It's only slightly faster than Knoppix in my experience; and it is also simpler than Knoppix, which may be what you want.

There sre several live CD distros, as well as distros showing up for those memory sticks. One is called PuppyLinux, which is very small and can run well on an older PC.

16. Debian-based

If you feel comfortable with the technicalities of installation, Debian is a good distro because Synaptic is the absolute best package management tool in the business. Installation program is improving, but if you aren't afraid of that, once you get it installed Synaptic takes over package management.

If you want an easy install, I'd try Ubuntu, which is also Debian based. Ubuntu has both a bootable CD and an installation CD.

I do not recommend any RPM (Red Hat) based distribution as RPM is clearly inferior to Debian in package management.

18. How about Ubuntu?

It has a LiveCD to try out. If you like it, you can install with the install CD. It's Debian-based, so you know it's good.

I don't use it myself, but I've been working with Ubuntu on a project and they're good people.

Highly recommended.
