Book suggestions needed
Hey everybody! I am wondering if anyone has any book suggestions regarding the conspiracy to kill Lincoln. I was watching the History Channel while on vacation and the show mentioned that someone was going to kill the vice president the same night as Lincoln but that person got cold feet. I am embarrassed to admit that I have never heard of such a thing. I know several people were executed for being involved but I don't know the back story.

Thanks!

1. I don't have a book recommendation,

but I do recall that the Secretary of State, William Seward, was attacked in his home and stabbed several times the night Lincoln was shot. He survived but his assassin (whose name escapes me) was hung with the other conspirators.

2. Did anyone reply to you? I'd recommend "Manhunt"
by James Swanson. the book is about the "12 Dy Chase for Lincoln's Killers" but of course goes into great detail about the entire night of the assasination. Indeed, there was a plot to wipe out most of the Federal government, but only the attacker of Seward carried out his task. The assassin sent for VP Johnson (George Atzerodt) got cold feet indeed.

3. Not specifically about the plot
But The Avenger Takes His Place focuses on the rise of Andrew Johnson and his first few weeks in office.
