Question for WWI history buffs.
I hope this place sees more action so I can get some replies. :)

This is a history question, but I come to it by way of genealogy.

I have a great uncle (dead) who was in WWI.

On his tombstone (in Kentucky) it reads:

Sherman Woodson
Michigan
Pvt 1C1 106 Engineers 31 Division
Died 2-19-1941

I'm trying to find out about his life through his military service. But I'm lost when it comes to divisions, etc. What I could find of the 31st division didn't have anything to do with his home state, Kentucky, or the state on his tombstone, Michigan. (I could be wrong there, but I really didn't find any links in my research.)

Any history buffs have any ideas? I'm completely stumped. Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here.
DU'ers know everything. Well, most DU'ers, not including me. ;)

Thanks ahead of time for any help or suggestions anyone can give to me.

1. Did your great uncle live elsewhere?
The 31st was a National Guard division primarily from Alabama, Georgia and Florida. However, it was not purely limited to those sources and it is very possible the 106th originated out of Kentucky.

I wouldn't worry about "Michigan" as that is where he died, there was a lot of intervening time between 1917/18 and 1941.

There is evidently somewhere a 106th Engineers Association who erected this plaque somewhere in Vicksburg.

You might try these addresses for more information (these are publicly listed on the Internet):

106th Engineer Combat Battalion (WWII)
Mr. |Earl R. Stonefield
8513 Pennsylvania Run Road
Fern Creek, KY 40228-2539
(502) 239-3020

Co A, 106th Engineers
Mrs. Bob Weisinger
120 N. Sunset Terrace
Jackson, MS 39212
(601) 372-1384

2. That's just it. I don't know if he lived anywhere else.
But the information you just gave to me will help me out a great deal. I want to get his military records and what you have provided will help me to get them! Thank you SO very much! :)
