Presidents' Day McClatchey editorial re FDR
March, 1936 -- President Roosevelt was inaugurated on one of the most critical days in American history. Banks were collapsing in every state. Fear was in the faces of men. Panic was in their hearts. It did not seem impossible that America was heading straight for the abyss of individual as well as national bankruptcy.

The manner in which Franklin Roosevelt met and calmed that crisis alone should entitle him to the everlasting well-done of his fellow countrymen. He proved in that first week of his administration that in entrusting her destinies to him the United States had made no mistake.

The nation demanded action; and it got action. The nation demanded positive leadership; it got positive leadership. And it has been blessed with a rebirth in faith, hope, and confidence.

FDR We owe him so much! We've never seen the likes of him and I'm beginning to think we never will.
