I just wanted everyone to know that my friend Bryan S. Bush is releasing a new book this Autumn entitled
"Butcher Burbridge: The Life and Legacy of Union (Brevet) Major General Stephen Gano Burbridge".
Burbridge was the Union military commander of Kentucky during the latter years of the Civil War. Egged on by the Radical Republicans of the day, he ruled over Kentucky with great brutality, including carrying out many summary executions without trial. He also was involved with the Great Hog Swindle of 1864, and also tampered with the 1864 election to help ensure a victory for Lincoln, who ultimately got swamped by Democrat George McClellan in the state.
This book is sure to introduce many to a part of Kentucky history that has gotten covered up not only by the expanse of time, but also perhaps by the embarrassment of this man's reign of terror.
