I stumbled onto this page for Barbara Jordan's 1976 opening speech at the democratic convention.
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/barbarajordan1976dnc.htmlThe site, American rhetoric, rates it as one of the best speeches in American History, right behind MLK, JFK, and FDR.
It's worth a listen. The site has the full text as well, but the speech takes less than 20 minutes. Play it while your doing laundry.
It saddened me, listening, to realize how little things have changed in 30 years. But it inspired me as well, because the fight continues, and we're coming back stronger than we've been in decades.
And the speech just rocks. If it doesn't ring you like a bell and make you want to jump up and cheer...well, then I don't think you have the soul of a liberal.
Hope someone stumbles across this and enjoys.
