no sound what so ever
Well I've done it again I have no sound on my computer.....nothing from aol or windows 98, yup still have it.

I reinstalled windows and aol but nothing not a peep. I checked my cables and they seem to be okay. The whole system seems to be bogging down lately and is running slower with errors.

Any ideas where to check?

1. I assume you've double-clicked on the speaker icon
and made sure that the "mute all" box isn't checked. I know that seems obvious but it has happened to me before and I do not know how it got muted, nor did the icon on the task bar have the slash across it showing that it was muted. Hope you get it figured out!

2. Hmmm
I forget many of the specifics of Windows 98 but I believe that in the lower right corner of the task bar there is a volume icon. Open it by double-clicking on it and you should see the different volume levels for various audio formats (CD, MIDI, etc.). I would first make sure that none of the volumes bars are so low that sound is inaudible. Also, below each volume bar there should be a 'mute' check box. Try un-checking each one except for the one located under the microphone bar and see if that gets you anywhere.

If it still doesn't work try browsing through the help file on the issue.

3. Try this
Try this....reboot your computer and when it restarts keep tapping the Delete key until the BIOS screen comes up. You will see a box in the upper left of your screen and in that box you will see ...Peripheral..click on that and see if you have Onboard Sound enabled....hit Esc key and click Save Changes and exit.

If that does not work.....Insert your 98 CD and when the 98 setup menu appears, Type the number 2 It should say....RESTORE WINDOWS 98- WILL NOT FORMAT HDD.
Make sure you do not format or you will lose your data. Sometimes when you do a reinstall some drivers are not picked up. This may be what happened to you.
