Samsung has a terrific unit on sale for $1500...

15,000/1 contrast ratio, 1920x1080p.

40" is huge, but would have the color gamut any designer would want... great for reading on too...

1. No, because I'm the chair of the Post-Consumerism Movement
The ability to afford a newer, bigger toy does not make it morally correct to purchase and use said power guzzling frivolilty.

2. Other people use even three or more 23" monitors. Why can't I have one 40" monitor?

5. Good point.
Two 40" monitors it is.

Of course, then I could no longer complain about certain things... those monitors juice up big time.

6. The more of this shallow idiocy i witness
the greater the belief is that the ability to pay for the newest technology should be an automatic bar to being allowed to operate the same.

I was joking about two 40" monitors - one alone is gross overkill, though the thought does have a sadistic appeal...

Still, your fascist viewpoint would make me ask questions about anything else you'd want to label me or do to me as punishment...

Shall I bow before your shining greatness?

BTW: I am so tempted to put up a pic or two that you wouldn't want to see...

Your bluster and name calling doesn't scare me. If anything, it speaks to your own character.

BTW: You didn't answer my questions. All you could do was insult. Speaks much about you too, particularly with your initial response (#1 above)... ;) Try honey instead of vinegar next time.

BTW2: Re: my use of the word "fascism" - you were telling me what to do. I thought you'd understand THAT much. Apparently not.

13. Frog ...

I want that frog.

And, what happened to the canard that computers were supposed to reduce the clutter on our desks? That man needs a filing system. :-)

14. What happened? Well,
a tool is only as good as those who make it and use it according to their own specifications. That's not the fault of any computer user... (I just hope the irony got through about consumerism and other points...)

I just hope canetoad understands, I was asking a serious question and his initial response was irrelevant flippancy. Had I responded to another person's OP with flippancy, I'd get whatever I deserved... and having been in that boat myself, there's little left to say (the fact he didn't respond is case point enough.)

19. Remember computers and the "paperless office"
That picture made me think of that. Computers were supposed to usher int the era of the paperless office. Also, I am sure Shrub's desk is spotlessly clean just like his little pea-brained mind.

4. Because...
You haven't been doing your chores and you still won't eat all your turnips. No 40" monitor for you.

Now, to the corner for your time out;-)

7. No ...

There are limits to utility, and that crosses them. A 24" monitor is about my personal limit. I have to sit back from it for it to be comfortable to view while looking at anything other than a picture.

Now, if all I did was play games or watch media on my computer, maybe, if I had the cash. But, I can think of a lot of other things I could do with that cash.

Out of curiosity, where does the comment about "color gamut" come from?

11. Color gamut
Most LCD monitors reproduce 70~75% of the NTSC viewable color range. "gamut" is another word for "range".
Newer LCD computer monitors approach 92% of the NTSC color gamut and are just about suitable for professional graphic designers.

High end TV sets also have a very wide color gamut, allowing for virtually accurate color reproduction.

12. I know what gamut means ...
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 10:24 AM by RoyGBiv
I was just wondering what made this monitor particularly better than others. The brand, size, and res didn't really tell me that.

There's a vast range of color reproduction quality among LCD monitors, and just saying today's are better than yesterday's doesn't really do it. Two separate ViewSonic monitors with otherwise almost identical specs I looked at last weekend when a friend was purchasing, for example, had differences in color display that were noticeable without any kind of measuring device.

15. I apologize; I didn't understand your question.
Size, resolution, the purported 15,000:1 contrast ratio (a meaningless figure, but having seen this monitor firsthand at the store, the blackness level and color saturation were brilliant without "blooming" the surrounding colors).

Still, your comment about 24" being a max size makes perfect sense...

16. Cool ...

Just curious really. If you've seen it, that's one thing. The way some of these monitor brands are advertised, though, makes things seem true that aren't, especially with regard to color quality and response time.

My friend bought a 24" with a Delta E (measurement of color quality, with lower being better) of 2.6. It's big. Huge. With the way his computer desk was setup, when you sat down in front of it, you were so close you'd find yourself actually turning your head from side to side to take in all parts of the screen. Had to move things back a little ... which was actually a good thing. Overall, it made everything more comfortable, but I'd just envision problems with a monitor bigger than that.

...unless of course you split the thing into two "screens," emulating what some people do with two monitors.

Lordy ... and here I sit at work staring at this 15" DellCrap(tm) thing.

17. 40 inch! Why bother, go for a Barco XDS-1000! Looks like this suckers about 120"!!!

(click on the picture at the Barco site, this thing is massive!)

The powerful XDS-1000 display management system is a user-friendly, desktop-integrated solution for powering multi-channel, high-resolution display walls. With its ability to display both mono- and stereoscopic sources at the same time, the XDS-1000 provides for the ultimate immersive, collaborative working environment. (more at link)

Barco are and have always been the best in large, professional displays, or at least they have been as long as I can remember, but they ain't cheap.

Seriously though, I wouldn't, a 40" 1920x1080 might not ruin you eyes, but then again, it just might.

The thing to do is, go take a look at one, but sit or stand in front of it at the same distance you currently sit in front of you current monitor, that's the best way to tell how good a monitor is for what you plan to do with it.

18. No, same reason I don't sit in the front row at the movies
Although multiple monitors makes sense if you need to have a lot of windows open at once -- the way Al has it is fine.

One super-big monitor could be problematic when you hit the 'maximize' button and the image blows up too big to see at one time. If I have to turn my head to view the whole screen it's too big.
